Recently the ABCbodybuilding management were able to meet Shawn Ray
at the Culver City Bodybuilding Championships. Right away we were
struck by his professionalism.
Shawn Ray’s career has been nothing short of magnificent. Beginning in
1983 Shawn began training at 165 pounds to gain mass for football
season. Shortly thereafter he encountered two time Mr. Universe John
Brown who inspired him to embark on one of the most illustrious careers
in the history of Bodybuilding. From that moment on Shawn Ray began an
absolute massacre of the teen circuit, winning every show he competed
in, including the1985 Teenage Mr. America and 1985 Jr. Mr. World! By
his 22 birthday he had earned his pro card! At 5-7, 215 pounds Shawn
has terrorized the pro circuit with over 12 top five finishes in the Mr.
Olympia, two wins at the Arnold Classic, as well as a Championship at
the Pro Iron man. While he has won numerous trophies, he still
proclaims that ‘The character of a man is not how he reacts in victory
but the lessons he learns in defeat.’ However, Shawn Ray’s character
extends beyond his pro bodybuilding career and to a legacy of promoting
and enhancing the popularity of the sport off stage in perhaps an
unmatched manner.
Still, perhaps the most incredible inspiration from Shawn Ray is his
testimony for Christ. In a recent commentary he stated that ‘Somewhere
between right and wrong, there is a battle being waged with only one
winner, Truth.’ In this context, his testimony has taken him to the
introduction of an event with a tremendous and charitable purpose behind
it. Therefore ABCbodybuilding takes great pride in announcing its
sponsorship of the 1st annual Shawn Ray Golf Invitational. All proceeds
will benefit The Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC). When I
recently spoke with Shawn about his Charity he stated that ‘ The CHOC
Hospital is a God Send for children who are in need of medical care and
events like this ensures their policy that "No Child" is turned away
regardless of their ability to pay.’
