What are some alternative exercises to power cleans? I find them very technical and intimidating.

Do them lighter and take the time to learn technique.
Check this article for help: http://www.t-nation.com/free_online_...he_power_clean Or check the Starting Strenght thread here: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showth...=998224&page=1 If you really want to do something else, power cleans hit posterior chain and traps, so choose exercises accordingly, i.e. deadlifts, squats, good mornings, glute-ham raises and some type of shrug.

i felt the same way zachary, but i decided i was gonna get them down. i know it sounds light but really just start with the bar. get the movement down that is comfortable and then move up in 5-10 pound increments every week. also as commader said read articles and watch videos on how to do them properly. keep at it , you will get them.

I felt the same way about deadlifting. The movement was awkward, I was worried about hurting my back. I finally realized how important the exercise is, so I got over my fear. I watched many videos and had others present to critique my form. Now, the deadlift is my favorite exercise!
