in this months edition of Strength and Conditioning...Gabe and Layne have an article on training to failure...check it out if you get a chance
Strength & Conditioning Journal. 32(3):21-29, June 2010. SUMMARY: INTENTIONALLY REACHING FAILURE DURING RESISTANCE EXERCISE SETS IS A COMMON PRACTICE THAT MIGHT BE MOST BENEFICIAL FOR STIMULATING HYPERTROPHY. HOWEVER, FAILURE TRAINING PERFORMED TOO FREQUENTLY CAN RESULT IN REDUCTIONS IN THE RESTING CONCENTRATION OF TESTOSTERONE AND CONTRIBUTE TO THE OVERTRAINING SYNDROME. THE RESEARCH SUGGESTS THE GREATEST EFFECTIVENESS WHEN FAILURE TRAINING IS PRACTICED CONSISTENTLY OVER 6-WEEK CYCLES, INTERSPERSED WITH EXCLUSIVE NONFAILURE TRAINING CYCLES OVER EQUAL PERIODS. COACHES SHOULD CONSIDER ATHLETES' TRAINING STATUS AND GOALS AND THE POINT IN A YEARLY TRAINING CYCLE TO DETERMINE WHETHER SETS ARE TO BE PERFORMED TO FAILURE OR ENDED SHORT OF REACHING FAILURE.

Look forward to the article. For a while now I've been thinking if it was worth while training to failure on a cut and even if it was counter productive.
I was actually thinking that at the end of my current cut I would go on a mini bulk and train to failure. Then go on a mini cut and and just try maintain max lifts (for reps) achieved from bulk cycle, but stop short of reaching failure. Would it be better to just bulk for 12 weeks (6 weeks training to failure and 6 weeks stoping short) and repeat for a cut Or 6 weeks bulk (train to failure) and 6 weeks cut (stopping short of failure) Or will I have to wait for the article to find my own answer lol |

is this study based on 'failure' i.e laid on the floor saying i cant do another rep or 'true muscle failure' as i dont think many people train to absolute failure the brain tries to stop you

it's not actually a study, it's a review article on how to implement failure training into an exercise program.
