Default Workout times

How much can the time you spend working out affect your gains. For e.g my workouts usually last 60-65 mins, I now have some one trying to tell me that; "Spending much over 45 mins per session is counter-productive, build up of cortisol, which is highly catabolic, begins to eat away at your gains".
Thoughts?

I've heard the same plenty of times for numbers ranging from 45mins to 60mins. I'm sure how detrimental it is, though my understanding was that you just got less benefits (generally) the longer you worked out beyond that certain point.

From what i read it didn't 'eat' your gains, just you benefitted less if you kept on going than when you were 15mins into the workout.

If im working out for longer than 45 mins about 20-30 mins into my workout i sip on some BCAA's with a bit of dextrose in.

yea i think its 47 mins when your testosterone levels and whatnot drop off. but as gregsimo said, you can just sip on some kind of shake during your workout with sugar and BCAAs in it and then you can actually keep on working out. im pretty sure the paper that did these tests did not take into account sipping on BCAAs during your workout.

honestly, i don't think a 60-65 minute workout will result in catabolism or excess cortisol build up to the point that it becomes detrimental. as long as you are workout hard for those 65 minutes you should be fine just waiting until pwo to get your supps in. physiologically there might be some minor changes but nothing noticeable. however, i'd avoid being in the gym for 90+ minutes in one session without something to consume.

if its around an hr, it'll be more detrimental to not finish your workout.

im curious to where you got that information , maybe an article?

im with Jinx on this one, dont go over 1.5hrs... whatever your workout consists of is what really will determine how long you need to workout for anyways.

Nope someone just brought up that working out more than 45 mins is detrimental, i called broscience and said i'm working out for about 60mins with no negative effects, then he said, "but bro my argument is backed up by 'scientific studies'" I have yet to see these studies.

honestly, as simplistic as what i'm about to say is...its true...just go in and train...there are so many factors involved, it'd take a good 10 years to fully understand...what if you are in a strength phase with long rest periods, then should you stop after 40 minutes...of course not...when i was squatting with smolov i'd take almost 8-10 minutes between sets on some days...if i stopped after 40 minutes, i would'nt of got anything accomplished...all things being equal, is it necessary to train for over an hour and a half a night...no...but you should never be thinking that you need to be on some sort of clock...never think, i need to be out of here by this time or i'm going to lose muscle
