Default Nutrition Class

Ok, so my teacher told me that %breakdowns should be...

60% Carb
25% Fat
15% Prot

..he also stated that diets high in protein are foolish, so forget what you read in the muscle magazines.

I tried to debate with him, but he would have none of it. I thought about throwing a 45lb plate at his head like a frisbee, but decided an A is better than a dead teacher.

Be careful about what you learn in that class.

He is generally correct about this. But of course, this is a very generalized diet plan. It depends on what you are doing. Are you an athlete? What is this guy a teacher of?

The most important thing is what the scientific evidence suggests. Not opinion--even educated opinion.

In a scientific setting, having an argument over a matter of opinion won't fly for a minute in the higher levels. What you simply do, is present objective evidence, and then ask for evidence suggesting other wise. The goal should not be to "win" an arguement or debate. But rather, to find truth.

This helps eliminate bias. You should not care if studies show you should have 50 grams of protein or 400 grams of protein. The goal is to optimize performance. So whatever evidence leads you to, is what you should do.

Anyway, check out our protein publication on the front page. You could print that out and ask her opinion.

I believe macronutrient percentages are entirely over rated, and much to simplistic. How much protein, carbs, and fats you should have is entirely dependent on your goals, muscle mass, etc.

totally agree with Venom, to make such a generalized statement for nutritional needs is pointless. how can anyone say the needs are the same for a bodybuilder, a triathlete and a 60 year old grandma? the 60/25/15 ratio is so often given as a basis, but it should be nothing more than a starting point for figuring out one's nutritional needs

I took numerous nutrition classes at school... most at undergraduate levels are designed for people who are completely clueless! The funniest thing i love looking at in the text books is the sample workouts! check them out...you'll get a laugh...
