Hey, question:
i dont fully understand. If someone doesnt have much fat on the belly, more of a beer belly. How does abs training (situps, leg raises, etc...) make your belly smaller when its building more muscle ontop of your beer belly. And how does cardio help make it smaller when a large portion of the beer belly aint fat? |

People with a "beer belly" aren't ripped all over and males do store more fat in their abdominals then anything else. If it was stomach distention (which you are sort of reffering too) then thats something a doctor should look at. |

My father to be exact, when he bends over, i can grab fat - but not as much as you'd expact. Probably twice as much as me when my bf% is quite low, im skinny.
That is why i ask. He deosnt want to run or do ab training (he doesnt workout either, only does pushups in the morning) because he says it wont help. And i cant prove him wrong since i dont know much. |

Quite often a protruded belly is the result of visceral fat stores - fat that is stored around the organs that you can't feel. Subcutaneous fat is the grabby stuff, and also what covers the abs and prevents definition.
I have a friend who looks like he has a fair sized stomach, but he has pretty strong abs, so his stomach is rock hard. That is the visceral fat pushing his stomach out. Unfortunately, doctors refer to visceral fat as "heart attack fat", because a large amount of it hugely increases the risk for coronary disease. On the up side, with exercise, visceral fat is the first fat to go.

Your father might also have ascites. This is basically excess fluid in the abdomen, usually caused by excessive drinking for a prolonged period of time....aka..beer belly.

Real interesting posts.
Also, type II diabetics are more likely to store fat around their waist-areas and stomachs because of insulin resistance. Oftentimes, these types of diabetics can be skinny everywhere else on their bodies but they will still have a large protruding gut. The science behind it is pretty much what Crazy-T said about fat storage around the waist.

Ok, well.
im gonig to start running with my father twice a week. Hopefully, the fat on his belly with disppear. thanks guys. The other problem i see to this is he is already a skinny guy. Therefore, he will be loosing weight everywhere where as he is only planning to lose belly fat yet gain size in his arms. its not a win win solution here. |

its not a win win solution here. [/ QUOTE ] It never is, that is the whole purpose of a bulk and a cut. To maximize muscle gain while minimizing fat gain and to maximize fat loss while minimizing muscle loss. Also, the importance of a proper diet is enormous.
