a quick question on squats, i have lower back problems, but i really want to do squats because of how important they are. i feel if i keep perfect form i should do damage to my back..is this true?
also when it comes to form should my back me stright or can i bend a little ( for example when in the lower postion should my legs and back be at 90 deg.?) |

Your back acts as a stabilizer during the squat movement. Correct form should use your muscles only, but if you're feeling pain you either have too much weight or you could just not have the bb correctly placed on your traps. Try and keep your back 90deg to the ground at all times, although it is probably unavoidable through sticking point of the movement, such as rising from going rock bottom. It is also important to keep your feet flat on the floor. Doing this with the 90deg back makes sure you're working your glutes and hamstrings effectively. I can't be completely sure, but i think if you have correct and strict form you should be okay to do them, even with lower back problems. It may just restrict the load you can take. Hope this helped

what kind of low back problems are you having?
do you just need to visit a chiropractor for a while to get it worked out? Or do you need to focus on low back exercises, like low back extensions for instance? if something is wrong with your spine, loading weight on it is not going to help anything, and might really complicate things.

If you have a smith machine available to you that would help take some weight off your back. Its the barbell on tracks, just make sure to keep your weight on your heels.

Front Squats would be much worse. all the weight is being held out in front of creating more pressure on your lower back.
I too have a tricky lower back but do my squats regularly.
