Default \"I don\'t know.\"

This is an email I sent to someone today who just infuriates me by spreading rumours about things he has no clue about. I think you can apply this to anyone who calls creatine a steroid, laughs at your eating habits, or tells you that bodybuilding is unhealthy. It is a few simple words that are just not used enough in this world.

[ QUOTE ]

It's that simple..."I don't know". Yet people sometimes have trouble using those words for whatever reason. Maybe it is just a fear of being ignorant but that is nothing to be ashamed of. Everyone is ignorant of something simply because nobody knows everything.

Most people will appreciate your honesty in giving them a simple "I don't know" than giving them false information or bad advice. It really is perfectly normal not to know something. This is why we have something called "learning".

So how about the next time someone asks you something that you just don't know the answer to you reply with a simple "I don't know". Just think what you will have accomplished. You will have directly contributed in reducing the amount of rumours, urban myths and fallacies that circulate today in our world.

Thank you for your kind co-operation in this matter.

"I was gratified to be able to answer promptly. I said I don't know."
- Mark Twain (1835 - 1910)

[/ QUOTE ]

So I am still waiting for an answer, not sure how he will take this but I really don't care.

Did this person spread rumours about you directly? If so then I think this is a highly civilised and mannerly response!

that is a great email Coz, and a very true point. It does baffle me when people just make up stuff to give an answer. When my customers ask a question I cant answer, I will tell them "that is a great question, I will have to research to find you an answer" and they always appreciate it. I think this should be an email sent to everyone

Being in the corporate world, I find these three words to be some of the most important in our vocabulary. You never want to give a client incorrect information. You gain more respect and trust by admitting you don't have the answer but will do the research to provide it. Many deals can and will be lost if these words are not used.

Not this time but he has in the past until I confronted him. This time he was giving bad medical advice. He's a lawyer.
