Okay, here's the deal. I have been intensely training my upper body for the past six months. I have seen growth and definition, but added bulk has been very slow.
Rather than training my legs in the conventional sense, I have been doing cardio - running about 5 miles or biking about 20 miles or so - heart rate high in either case. My question/concern is this. If one doesn't build their legs in the conventional sense will that inhibit the bulk, or muscle growth, throughout the rest of the body? Would that prevent the other parts of the body from increasing in mass? I have heard it elsewhere that if you don't work all major muscle groups (outside of cardio) that you don't sufficiently recruit/secrete natural growth hormones to advance in size. Any truth to this? I understand that not working your legs in the traditional sense might cause muscular asymetry, but I'm interested in knowing if it has any secondary impact on overall bulking.

Yup ... squats increase the growth hormone which makes all the difference in the world in your gains in all the body parts.

of course, thats why one of the rules of bodybuilding is to squat. Never neglect legs.

If you neglect legs you will also be forfeiting a lot of fat burning muscle mass.

17" tyres on a bus, doesnt look good right. Same with bodybuilders, cant have a huge upper body and a lousy lower body, gotta be a balance.

and let's not forget mental toughness...your hardest upper body workout can't compare to your hardest squat day...if you can conquer squats, you can conquer anything upper body day can throw at you.

While I am concerned about overall symetry, I am even more concerned about not allowing my body to get as big as I can. There seems to be a general consensus that by not working the legs one cannot experience upper body hypertrophy, not to mention overall hypertrophy.
Alrighty then, tonight begins the leg burns.
