Default no results from shoulder exercises

hi, I'm a bit of a newb to working out. I've done it casually for abit, but since starting a more serious approach I've encountered a small problem.

When doing shoulder exercises, such as military press etc, the next day when I'm supposed to ache in my shoulders, I feel it more in my triceps. I barely feel anything in my shoulders. I was wandering wassup wid dat? I think my posture and stuff is correct and I'm doing enough of the exercises, I'm always exhausted when I'm done and stuff. I don't really under stand how come I feel more sore in my triceps..

Are your triceps weak? If you have an unusually weak muscle, it will often get tired before the muscle you’re trying to target. If you persist, the weak muscle will catch up. Although, I wouldn't think tricep involvement in most shoulder movement is enough for that, but maybe.

Have you checked the exercise database on this site for some form tips? You may also want to try doing them sitting down on something that could support your back; some people seem to find it more effective.

Have you tried other exercises for the same muscle group? Often, if you do the same thing to long, it just stops having the effect it used to. Also; we all have things that don’t work for us. If military press doesn’t work, try standard shoulder press, or Arnold press. Check the exercise section for a list of things you can use.

Do you overload your muscles? If you do 10 reps at 20 lbs over and over again, not much will happen. Even if you have never got sore from shoulder things before, this can happen; assuming you didn’t do enough to get sore while casually working out, but did enough to allow your body to adapt.

Just some things to consider.

Theres a couple things you can do...
1) Widen your grip so your forearms are perpendicular to the bar.

2) Use pre-exhaustion techniques such as performing dumbell lateral raises prior to shoulder presses to fatigue your shoulders and cause a greater response within the muscle.

3) Or you may just have disproportionately weak triceps; prioritize them in your workouts until they catch up with the rest of your body.

yea.. you could also try increasing the volume of your shoulder workouts!
