sugar alcohol

I searched all through my supermarket today looking for sugar free syrup and i found about 6 different brand. Though the problem was they didnt have sugar but they had 'sugar alcohol instead.' When i hear either of those words it sends up a huge red flag, but i bought it anyway. Each 1/4 cup contains 11 grams of sugar alcohol but it only has 30 calories (Doesnt add up i know.) Also i use probable 1 tbsp with my oatmeal and thats it so how bad is it?
