I work alone with free weights, I decided against one because of the locked form.

If possible try to ask someone to spot you on a regular bench, like a trainer or someone. Using the smith deprives you of stabalizing the weight be yourself, which is an important part of the lift.

I think the smith machine restricts your range of motion too much personally. I only use it on occaission for something different.

Unfortunately, I go to a really small gym with no incline bench set up, so you either use DB's or use the smith machine. :S

Why can't you just throw a bench in the power rack. I would use dumbells to bench before I use the smith.

Yeah, I agree with the power rack suggestion here.

Smith benching can be used effectively near the end of a workout when the chest is already prefatigued, to work it without the stabilizers, a la 8 weeks to bigger pecs 2. But as your meat and potato benching exercises, free weights is the way to go.

Other than the reasons given so far - in my opinion, if your benching with a smith machine, your form is incorrect.

the smithmachine is good, lots of pros use it. So can you. You can really concentrate on only letting your chest do the job in a smith.
