I tried some of the principles I read on this great website and I am very sore. I don't know if this is a good thing though. Specifically, i tried the principle of supersets, that is training to failure, by starting at a lower weights and progressively going up to higher weights without stopping. I did this for my back and for my biceps. This was on December 29th (6 days ago). I also read another book that INTENSITY is key. I determined to make my workouts intense using these principles. Problem is, I am still very sore - especially my forearms (which i didnt even work out individually). Now some soreness is expected and a good thing - thats what makes the muscles grow. But i still cant workout other muscles I am so sore! My concern is that this is more damaging than it is good. I have been eating a lot. Is 6 days too long? Do you thing i went too intense? Will this soreness pass after a few more instense workouts? By the way, I have worked out for YEARS but never really pushed my limits so to speak. I am used to a littel soreness but not this much. Advice? Comments? Thanks, Dirk |

There's no such expression as going too intense. Just go in there, war till you drop then get out, eat and sleep and come back next day for another battle - an infinite war.

My concern is that this is more damaging than it is good. I have been eating a lot. Is 6 days too long? Do you thing i went too intense? [/ QUOTE ] I am a big believer in 2 things: 1) Intensity is all in your head. If you have the mindset that nothing will stop you, then nothing will. If you walk up to do a set, and you think "Wow, this is heavy, I dunno if I'm going to get it"...well...then you've already lost the battle my friend. 2) The only thing that can stop your progress is inadequate recovery techniques. You say your eating alot, but WHAT are you eating? Are you getting the proper macronutrients to support a high intensity type training routine? Are you getting proper sleep? Staying hydrated? Did you stretch before/during/after your workout? Have you tried any active recovery for the muscles since the last workout? All these ??'s are important to help determine why your DOMS is so intense. [ QUOTE ] Will this soreness pass after a few more instense workouts? [/ QUOTE ] That depends on many variables. Its possible it could, but then there's a possibility it could continue. [ QUOTE ] By the way, I have worked out for YEARS but never really pushed my limits so to speak. I am used to a littel soreness but not this much. [/ QUOTE ] If you've NEVER really pushed yourself, then being this sore could very well signal that you shocked your body. Which is a good thing if you want growth. Welcome to hardcore lifting bro!

Odds are it was the alcohol, and lack of sleep.

First day I did '8 weeks to bigger back...'
- I was in complete agony for at LEAST 5 days. My chin even had DOMS from grimacing the last few reps out on deadlifts! First day I did '8 weeks to bigger pecs...' - I had 6t day doms and trouble changing gears in my car for at least two of those! ..yeah, the principles on here will SHOCK the hell out of your body - and I, at first, was asking myself the same question. but NO - ima go ditto on the other posters: its impossible to train TOO intensely! Muscle soreness is good - just make sure everything is upto scratch in order to repair yourself.

The first time I did squats, I could hardly hop off the can for a week. The DOMS will pass. Just try to get more sleep, stay hydrated, and lay off the alcohol. Your body will become more used to your workouts.
