hey, i am currently taking birth control. my dermatologist put me on it to help my skin, however i think it's prohibiting me from being able to lose the fat. I was going to stop taking it as it is not really effecting my skin much anyway. What do you guys think? Will going off the pill help me to lose the fat that my body is holding on to?
thanks! |

Isn't 'the pill' just small doses of estrogen to make you ovulate faster, or not ovulate, then it just releases the egg one day? (I do not remember exactly what it does, i forgot, we talked about it in health)
Anyways, I do not see why that would affect you, and make you store fat. |

Hm, I think the logic behind the pill is that it releases a particular female hormone (man, can't remember the name from AP Bio...) that fools the body into thinking it's pregenant and thus not release any more eggs. This is just a guess but perhaps the body would be averse to losing fat in this condition since it's meant to foster an environment that supports another developing life.

Different pills work differently, but many play on the estrogen/progesterone ratio in order to achieve the desired result. That would most certainly make it harder for you to lose fat due to the effect of female sex hormones on alpha-2 receptors (in places such as thighs and buttocks), hardgaingirl.

It would both aid in storing and inhibit the ridding of female-pattern bodyfat, yes.

It is always possibly when taking BCPs that bodyfat loss will slow down, and also possible it will increase. You needn't necessarily stop taking them, however; you may want to try a low-dose pill like Alesse or Tri-Norinyl. Discuss it with your doctor.

She's not on the pill for birth control purposes, though, but rather to try and clear up her skin (estrogen tends to have that function in many people).

[/ QUOTE ] Meh, understood, I just didn't want to make that assumption if she had rather kept other purposes private, despite her initial statement. No matter...
