Default Have kidney damage at age 25 - high protein diet?

I just had some results back from blood tests and they should that I have damage to my kidneys! I'm only 25, and barely drink alchol (less than a glass a month!). The only thing they could put it down to is the protien levels in my diet. And I only have aroun 150-200g per day.

Anyone else experienced this?

I dont know, some people say a high protein diet can cause damamge, but others say no. Optimum Nutrition swears that having a high protein diet cannot hurt you in any way. Though, i've read a few articles that say otherwise.

How long did you have a high protein diet for?

Are you drinking tons of water? It's my understanding that the more protein we eat the more water we should be drinking as well. Helps the kidneys process it all.

I drink at least 4 litres a day, so I'm certainly not dehydrated. I've eaten around 150-200g of protein for the past 3 years. I feel and look better, but my kidneys don't!

Have you taken creatine? What supplements do you use? What kind of protein sources did you have a lot of?

My boyfriend had a blood test a few months ago, and they also said that he could have kidney damage - he's trains hardcore, and follows a high protein diet. He vowed that after the test, he would cut down on the protein shakes, etc. etc. - which never really happened He went to the doc again to get retested a couple weeks ago - and everything came back fine. So my advice to you - maybe get another blood test?

Good luck!!!

Thanks for the feedback. I do take creatine - sporatically - as well as glutamine and gaba. I've got 6 weeks until I see the urologist, so I'll have to hang out until then to see what they say. I've got to do a few more tests and have an ultrasound.

I spoke to the nutritionist that I co-authored my books with and he said that at this stage continue to eat normally and make sure I tell the urologist every supplement I take.

Continue to eat "normally" or normally the way we do? Maybe the creatine has something to do with it? How did you know to get tested?

The nutritionist is a b.builder so normally for us!

It is quite funny how I was tested. I've been getting pain in my shins. I wanted to go to an oestopath for some mulipulation, but my doctor wanted me to see an Orthopeadic surgeon! So I saw him and he put me through every blood/urine test under the sun. That is when it was detected. I'm sending my exact results through to the dietician to "translate" for me tomorrow, so it'll be interesting to see what he says.
