Smile Muscle growth while cutting

What is the best way to maintain or even grow muscle during cutting phase? What exercise must be done? Heavy or HIIT?

Lifting heavy and eating clean. And save your hiit for a switch up after six or eight weeks or so. But lifting to failure is the best way to build muscle.

This.

The same thing that built your muscle in the first place will keep it. There are no magical exercises. Just keep using the ones that work for you.

However, when you are in a caloric deficit, you will notice you are not able to recover as well from workouts. Thus volume may need to be reduced at times and I would caution you not to use failure often.

While I tend to disagree with Ratcat about using failure when cutting, I do agree with his thoughts on HIIT. Basically, most fat loss should occur with diet and you only want to start throwing in extra sessions (like HIIT) when you have stalled.

May I add it's probably difficult to ADD muscle when cutting as you really need those extra calories to pack on the meat...Maintaining your muscle should be easier with a good routine and diet...Most people bulk before cutting, not at the same time

That will be highly individual as people hold their fat in different places. Thus, someone can look good with 15% bodyfat, while another individual may need to be down to 8 or 9% to really feel that they look good. Muscle mass is important as well, the more lean mass you have, you can "get away" with a slightly higher amount of fat.

In terms of health, I don't know, I have never researched what is optimal from a health and longevity standpoint.

In my own opinion, you cannot gain muscle while you want to cut.

you have to chose between the two.
