Default Roasted Turkey Leg

Ahh, turkey, the low fat Bodybuilder's friend...

As we know, a turkey breast is not only cheap, but super low fat and full of protein...the only downside? It can be a little dry and tasteless...I saw some super-sized turkey legs in the supermarket today and they were stupidly cheap (seems nobody wants those good ole legs) - 900g = 1.61 Euros (about $2.50 I reckon), so I picked up two and roasted them today...I have to say they were excellent, very juicy and full of flavour. I made them using a recipe I found on the net...

1. Put the oven on to 350 F or around 180 C

2. Make a dry rub for your legs, using whatever you like the taste of and whatever is in your cupboard. I used salt, black pepper, sweet paprika and five spice powder. Leave the skin on, you can always remove it before you eat it to lower the fat/calorie content

3. Wash your legs and pat them dry, then place on a piece of foil and rub in the dry rub, coating the legs evenly.

4. Put in a small knob of butter for mositure and flavour, then wrap the legs in the foil and put into the oven.

5. Roast for 1 hour in the foil, then open the foil, baste and continue to cook for a further 20-30 minutes, depending on your oven

6. Check the legs are fully cooked using a knife to look deep inside, then leave to rest in their juices for 10 minutes before serving

I hafta say that these legs went down a treat and my wife was picking the bones clean on both legs. It's hard to be accurate with the calories, but by my estimation (and the help of My Fitness Pal) a 1lb leg will yield around 8oz of meat and that equates to 356 calories, 0 carbs, 8 fat, and a whopping 65 protein without the skin.

Feeling satisfied and a little like Fred Flintstone.

I can't say I've seen them in the shops here. I must have a better look. Cheers.

My sister ran the kitchen in our little apartment when we were growing up even though my mother, who was the breadwinner, dictated what we would have for dinner. My mother taught my sister how to make our favorite roasted turkey drumsticks
