To the Christians who are excited for Obama, can you explain the basis for your excitement?

Spider-man: Your comments on the "take from the rich, give to the poor" fears is legitimate... however, you must understand that the drug addicsts/alcoholics, and inherently lazy people that will get more money are such a small number when looking at it in the bigger picture. What his upper-income tax hikes will do is provide more money for discretionary spending for things such as education, affordable healthcare, and yes, some will go to welfare. But, as you suggested, welfare does help a lot of people. Unfortunately, all we hear about is how welfare is abused. Listen, I worked at a grocery store in a sketchy area for a year. I saw people come through with the EBT/Food Stamp cards, dressed in brand new clothes, wearing jewelry, and buying Steak, shrimp, lobster, etc. HOWEVER, if we were to regulate their food purchases we WOULD become a socialist society. It's their choice what to buy- is it unfair? yes, but it's reality. On the other hand, I saw way more people come through the line loading up a cart full of cheap Spaghetti and Potatoes. Negativity is induced by a magnification of the abuse of the system by a minority of the users; in reality it is corrupt but it DOES help a lot of people. ... and that rant was just about FOOD STAMPS! Education needs a lot of work, as does healthcare. I think we will see a lot of good be done, and socialism come none-the-closer to this great capitalist country. |

Honestly, I can't see this election changing a single aspect of my personal life. Throughout the campaign I felt like I was watching MTV or something equally as useless, and Obama and Palin were on a reality show.
That aside, the economy will return back to a somewhat normal state within the next 4 years and Obama will get all the credit for that, just like how Clinton got the praise when the economy was doing so well in the 90s. I'm personally terrified of the state our education is in... Just during my high school years I noticed huge changes in the mentality of students and teachers alike. The problem isn't so much the funding; I think it's much deeper than that. A lot of teachers I remember didn't want to be there, and couldn't have given a rats *** whether or not these kids passed. My senior class started at around 500 students and finished well under 400. I was very surprised to find other students who were willing to learn, and teachers that were willing to teach, and learn as well, when I headed to college. I don't really know what this rant is about. Something about somehow finding teachers that care. This is something that could take a while, seeing as though the problem can be traced back to the grassroots, so to speak.

Maybe my question was misunderstood, I could care less what religion Obama is, I vote based on a candidates record, proposed policy, character, etc.
I am asking, if fellow Christians can explain why they are excited for Obama based on his policy plans, voting record, etc.

I'm sorry guys and brethren, this thing has been about race all time and not about solving the problems so many Americans face. If Black or White could solve all the problems then let's put the right color in there. I think America has fallen away from God he took his hand off us and now we have what we wanted and we are going to pay for it. I as a VETERAN do not support a man that will not support the flag I fought for. Sorry if this is a little more than I needed to add here.

Joel:
Education is in shambles. Blame can be equally split between deteriorating morals and values, and also the No Child Left Behind program. In reality, it IS partially about funding, as teachers' compensation is sometimes tied to students' test scores. Also, the curriculum is taught to a test, not to promote knowledge. It's all about the kids doing well on a test, which does nothing for their brains. As for the potential economic boom, yes, Obama will probably get credit for it. However, as good as the 90's tech boom was, Clinton actually STIFLED the economic expansion with his fiscal policy. Let's hope Obama makes the right fiscal moves during the economic rebound so that we can really springboard out of this recession in the next year or two. Commander: Understood, but religion must have a part in your comment because by asking for fellow Christians' defense of Obama, you are indirectly suggesting that Obama's policies are not as good as McCain's in the context of Christianity. Gay Marriage and abortion should be a moral dilemma, not a religious dilemma, but in reality there is far more religion involved in these issues than there should be. Rickck: God has nothing to do with who won the election. There are plenty of other religions and agnostics that voted in this election too. It is the will of the people, not the will of God. I am sick of hearing about God from presidents. I think republicans bring Church and State way too close together. Also, "we are going to pay for it" is an incredibly ignorant thing to say. As DC Dave said, no one even blinked at Obama's skin color. It's unfortunate that we still have a racist population in the south. Last edited by rootb33r; 11-06-2008 at 07:54 PM. |

My personal spirituality obviously impacts what policies are important, as it should for all Christians. I will again restate, I don't care if Obama is an atheist, Christian, Hindo, or whatever, if he had plans/policies/etc. that resonated with me than I would have voted for him. Any Christians willing to state why they are excited about Obama?

As a Christian and a person I believe Obama is this country's and this world's best chance for peace. I have never seen the majority of the world become so excited over one single man before. Obama has seen different parts of this world and he has a view very few Americans have. A lot of people around the world hate Bush and I do mean Hate and they lost respect for America because of him. You have people from across the world inspired by Obama that truely believe he will fix things and bring back respect to America. Lets face it as Americans we are spoiled. We have it much better than the majority of people in this world. We have freedoms and choices in our life. Even poor Americans have it much better than most others in this world. We don't have to worry about being slaughtered on our 10 mile walk to get water each day like people in Africa. We have homes made of brick and wood with heat and air conditioning Not homes made of cow dung.

Great post superbilt. You're dead-on about the foreign countries' perception of the US. We need someone the rest of the world respects, and I think Obama is that man.
