I recently read something by Lyle McDonald where he recommended performing HIIT for 8-20 minutes (based on your ability to perform HIIT), followed by 20-30 minutes of steady state. The gist of the recommendation was that the HIIT - in addition to the after-burn the HIIT provides - flooded the bloodstream with FFAs immediately after you stopped HIIT. Performing 20-30 minutes of steady state then burned off the ffa in the bloodstream, thus maximizing the fat-burning potential.
