Made a smart choice posting here!

Weight loss is all about diet. Exercise just facilitates the process. I would start with that. Post it up for a critique. Also post your split up (or what you have in mind).

40 minutes a day of exercise is more than enough. As for your joints, there are a lot of really good cardio machines, like the elliptical, which are low impact on the joints. Try those.
