Hard for me to say right now. I think if you are able to time it right, complex carbs will do just fine. But I find it needs to be 60-90 minutes prior to the workout to work optimally. Wait longer and energy will not be as good; eat sooner and you might have stomach problems. I started having easily digested carbs in my shake because I have a hard time timing that w/ my schedule. This allows me to time my carbs consistently.
I would try out both methods and see how your energy and performance is in the gym.
