barbells and lifting
Since I'm new to lifting, I want to know is it normal to have that pain at the top of your spine/back? When I do squats with the barbell, it doesn't sit on my neck, more like it sits on the top of my back. Am I placing it wrong? or is it something one gets use to (kind of like the pain from plucking your eye brows- you get used to it, and feel no pain later on down the road).
What is likely happening is that the bar is resting on one of the vertebrae of your neck and thus causing the pain. I would suggest attempting to create a "shelf" with your shoulders and traps. Pull your shoulders back slightly and flex your upperback muscles, this will create a cushion for the bar to sit on and keep it off of your neck. Good luck!
I would definitely try what the Commander mentioned. I remember when I first started weight lifting, I had the same exact problem. I had to put on some mass on my traps which cushioned the weight in addition to what the Commander said. I'm assuming that most women wouldn't want huge traps though. If creating a shelf doesn't alleviate the problem, you still have a few other options as well.
1. Use a pad or wrap a towel around the bar to provide cushion.
2. Perform front barbell squats.
3. Perform dumbbell squats.
4. Perform dumbbell front squats.
Just a few options you can choose from and still use free weights.
