Leg strength without squats
I have been tearing up my back lately. I think I may have sciatica and/or a herniated disc in my back. I can't possibly do any squats. Even with an empty bar the pain is like lightning down my leg and my knees buckle immediately. I can do leg presses no problem. Is that a good substitute? I'm really trying to develop leg strength with 5 x 5 training but I can't possibly do squats right now.

You should go see a doctor, figure out what the injury is, and follow the appropriate protocol to recover and train properly again.

No leg presses are not a good substitute. you need to fix the injury. leg presses wont get you where you wanna be.

if it is a disc then you will lose the ability to do deadlifts soon too.....
