Muscular fitness and mortality
Something we all may have suspected... lifting weights and making yourself stronger can increase the length of time you live for. The abstract below is from a short paper published last year by the NSCA. It is an interesting read. I would recommed anyone who has access to the NSCA journals to check it out.
Strength and Conditioning Journal: Vol. 27, No. 3, pp. 80–85. Survival of the Strongest: A Brief Review Examining the Association Between Muscular Fitness and Mortality Jeffrey M. Willardson, MS and Catrine Tudor-Locke, PhD, FACSM SUMMARY The majority of studies that have examined the association between physical activity and mortality have referred to physical activity in the context of aerobic exercise. Recent evidence indicates that stronger persons live longer independent of aerobic fitness level, and that the greatest health-protective benefits are evident when progressing from low to moderate strength levels. |

Re: Muscular fitness and mortality
Great read Ryan,
the thing is today, so many of the increases in disease and mortality are related to hypokinetic disorders. The more sendentary people become the more prevalent the disorders. Exercise is amazing and has so many positive benefits |
Re: Muscular fitness and mortality
^^^ too true.
That reminds me of a quotation one of my former physiology professor used once: [ QUOTE ] If exercise could be packed into a pill, it would be the single most widely prescribed, and beneficial, medicine in the nation. [/ QUOTE ] I'm not sure who the quote is originally from however. |
