View Full Version : Why Do You Work Out?

I've been very interested in the psychology of body building for quite some time, but I don't have the qualifications and stuff. I just find it very interesting and even just observing my own behavior in terms of motivation ec. has been a learning experience.

There was a time when I could barely keep myself out of the gym for more than a day. it became sort of an addiction and it was like I was addicted to "that feeling" you get after a good workout.

Then a time came when a lot of stuff happened in my life and finding the motivation to go to the gym was a real challenge.

I just could not really find a good balance. At the moment I seem to be in a good place in terms of motivation and I can pretty much motivate myself at will.

I think the main "driving force" has been finding a real compelling goal. The times when it was hard to keep and get myself motivated has just been me fluffing around in the gym without any clear goals.

For myself i think; it's many things indeed.

For Manhood, greater self - confidence, more meaning to myself, the concept of fulfilling and forever being in an aspirational frame of mind, not Ambitious you understand, but pure aspiration: An ongoing charm of will and determination to become whatever it is, that your most deepest concern desires!
And for my part, i feel the condition at which these attributes become motives are all but constantly changing.
Yet when the oldest and most significant motives once more are remembered;

'Stronger becomes the aspiration toward the achievement of greater dexterity about all things.' :)

I think that's my motivation; or perhaps i was writing as i was thinking.

Still, thanks for reading and Godbless.

take a self defense class. Chances are the guy in the alley has a weapon and doesn't care what you look like.

hahahaha!!!

Like I have told others who ask me, this question is like asking a kid why do you go to the playground. Because it is AWESOME!

i workout because ive always been the ectomorph, skinny guy who wants to be big but never could. then i realised i could be whatever i wanted to be and my motivation is the fact that no matter how hard i train and how much i gain, i know that i can always keep going and improve more.
Also for me its become part of my everyday life, so it is as much routine as something that i choose to do, even on my rest days i miss going to the gym.

And chances are I have a concealed .45 on me as well! Its sad that it has come to that tho...str8 up fights don't seem to happen anymore.

But back to the topic:

I achieve such gratification to build upon what I have and to consistently make it better. Its nice to compare myself to older photos, and have the pleasure of saying "I did that." I also think it portrays character very efficiently. Most of the time, when you see someone with a nice physique, you know it took will, determination, dedication, and sacrifices for them to get there. You know it not only took hours in the gym, but hours in the kitchen, hours crunching numbers, and even hours skimming message boards to achieve what they built. I think more and more today, people realize that physiques simply are not made from just "pumping iron." I have gained the respect of many individuals because they know what I have done to achieve my physique, and that they will never put forth the effort to do so. People respect that I have that much dedication and motivation to set goals and not only achieve them, but exceed them.

i see size as advantage and disadvantage when i comes to this, i used to get in fights at school when small but always 1-1 now i only get started on by more than one person at a time

Because I must. Its purely intrinsic, it just consumes the majority of my thoughts and drives my actions. I have this picture of the physique that I want in my mind and each day I train I feel I am one step closer to achieving that goal.

I've thought on this while working out the past few times.

I like the idea of shaping my body. I like the idea of being strong. I like seeing the results of my efforts in the mirror, and I like wearing this muscle out in the world.

I like it when guys look at me, size me up, show a touch of respect and a touch of envy, but I never like a fear reaction from anyone. I feel almost compelled to smile and issue a reassuring greeting.

But the one I enjoy most is when women forget themselves and stare too long.

My latest spur of motivation happened as I traveled to London. I wore a bit of a gut and was without a doubt one of the bigger people around, but not by too much. Nothing that would cause anyone to stop and gape. During my time there, I unknowingly became used to the smaller size of people (normal BMIs).... then I flew back to JFK where I was without a doubt one of the skinniest people in the airport. I was stunned to see sooo many fat people waddling about.

Another moment for me was going to the mall--something I rarely do. I walked by a shoe store and they not only had stock and selection but they were also displaying the fatboy shoes in the front window. I was flabbergasted that stores would carry these standard, but more so that they were displayed in the front window. Naturally they were running shoes.

Now there's someone i couldn't agree more with. I adhere to the same philosophy as your appealing confidence in this mad world of today.
I ain't very big, but because of my tissue paper like skin my muscles look quite menacing to some. I can not help myslef from smiling and conveying my true personality if i feel people are perhaps intimitated or look lost for words and comfort.

Its a great stress reliever. No matter how bad of a day I have, lifting always puts me in a better mood. sometimes a good pump can really turn my day around.

My number one reason is because it's a requirement for a job I'm in the middle of applying for.
Number two is be able to pin my brother in law.
Number three is because it makes me feel really good
and last but definitely not least, is for my wife ;)

That's definately me. I have to get out and do something or I won't do anything productive with my day. Going to the gym makes me feel good and kind of wakes me up and gets me motivated. That's why I train! :D

Physically speaking, I'm fine. I do feel as though I'm not quite awake for my entire morning though since I've done nothing to get it going. Also, I feel like I've accomplished nothing.

This depends upon the day for me. Sometimes I do, but not always. When I do feel poorly, I feel like sludge.

I have a few reasons. Working out pulled me out of a pretty bad depression when I was younger. So that stigma of helping me through hard times will always be there. Second, it makes me happy. My day is way better if I hit the gym shortly after waking up. I feel lost if I don't go. And lastly, I've made a pledge to myself that I will work out until the day I die. I may miss a day here and there, but I will have my split and continue to do it until I am completely unable.
