Alright, I went and bought some BCAA's and HMB's. I am just wondering when is the optimal time and how much of these should I be taking? I did a forum search and came up with pre workout 30 mins for BCAA. How much should I take pre-workout and when else do I take it? I couldn't find much on hmb's and i nthe diet programs the link is broken. Thanks!

There are no experiments testing the effects of HMB timing on muscle growth. However, Wilson, Wilson and Panton (2006) are in the middle of an experiment right now. We believe the results will be similar to those seen with amino acids--pre-workout and post workout are best.

HMB returns to baseline levels at around 9 hours after consumption; peaks around 2-3 hours after consumption. So you want to have it pretty frequently, in my assessment.

Current evidence suggests 3 grams of HMB is optimal. But there are only 2 or 3 experiments that have actually examined having more (they gave 6 grams); while they did not find positive results, with some additional variables, such as training load and optimal timing considered, you may need more HMB.

I personally take 6 grams a day. But I am absolutely killing myself to get cut right now.

Caloric deficits increase protein requirements; so this, and other catabolic situations may be a good time to up HMB and other supplements.

If I'm supping with Whey, EGCg, CEE, and vitamins...what should be next on my list?

I'm kicking around the idea of NO xlopde, although I'm not sure about that quite yet. I feel like I havn't proved myself with adequate gains recently. Should I pick up HMB or Glutamine first? My gut says glutamine (although i've always hated taking it), but reading some of these HMB articles really peaks my interest :]

The first thing I would do is get essential amino acids. They literally are the key to protein synthesis--period. The more you can have of these, the better.

Next, man, it is so hard to choose between glutamine and HMB. I'd go with glutamine, first, though. It is a conditionally essential amino acids, and can get quickly depleted if you are doing a really hard-core bodybuilding routine. Next, go for the HMB.

But all three of those supplements are winners. They have literally changed my bodybuilding life haha. /forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif

If you hate taking glutamine then I hate to think what your reaction would be to hmb (assuming it's in the cheaper powder form). That is the worst tasting supplement on the planet I think. I actually like the taste of glutamine.

The glut I take tastes like nothing in just straight water. My BCAA powder on the other hand....I can't taste it that much in a shake, it just makes it a bit chalky. For the next half hour to an hour though I burp up BCAA. It is really nasty.

Haha, thanks Venom. You've always been my fav admin /forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif I was leaning on Glut. anyways. Also, you're totally right about the AA's. I can't believe I've been skipping them over for so long (especially with all my anatomy/physiology/chemistry/microbio courses)!

I just don't like the grainy-ness of hte glut. I always shoveled it down my mouth and tried to wash it down asap. I've choked on glutamine more times than I can count /forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif

And what do you mean, "you like the taste"? It has no taste! it's just grainy stuff! Did you get flavored Glut? You can afford the carbs? :P

I disagree, Twinlab's PM protein powder is the nastiest thing I've ingested for this sport...

As far as BCAA's, does anyone recommend a certain brand? I had ON's BCAAs in pill form which I would take before morning cardio and it was nauseating....

Nutmeg, I'm guessing you haven't tasted HMB powder then. Trust me, no protein powder can compare to the experience of spooning HMB powder. (and welcome back, btw)

It has a slightly sweet taste, that's all I mean. So it's not something I dread spooning onto my toungue. /forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif And I use champion's btw.

Yeah Nutmeg, you have to try it for yourself. I actually spoonfuled it the first time and almost died!!

But really, I couldn't gulp that shake down all at once, and I needed to hold my nose to tolerate it and chase it down with a tablespoon of safflower oil /forum/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
