Hey guys, love the christian flavor of the site, I was discussing with a friend the other day about the fear of the Lord, he was talking like he was frightened of the Lord, as we were talking I remembered a verse from the Old Testament That said "The fear of the Lord is to hate evil", until I found, and read this verse I was under the notion that the fear of the lord was humans fearing God, Problem is He wants the exact verse and I cant remember it, I believe it was either eclesiastes (I cant spell) or Proverbs, has anyone here ever read this verse and if so do you remember where it is to be found. Thanks alot guys, GREAT SITE

Yes, and there are many other verses related to the Fear of the LORD:
Deut 10:12 "And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God require of you, but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul,
Deut 14:23 And before the LORD your God, in the place which he will choose, to make his name dwell there, you shall eat the tithe of your grain, of your wine, and of your oil, and the firstlings of your herd and flock; that you may learn to fear the LORD your God always.
Deut 28:"If you are not careful to do all the words of this law which are written in this book, that you may fear this glorious and awful name, the LORD your God,
And there are many others...

John Bevere wrote a wonderful book on the fear of the Lord that I would reccomend everyone to read.
You can order it off of his website or from CBD ( probably cheaper )

"Fearing" the Lord in this sense doesn't mean to be scared of Him. Fear in this translation and how it is used in the original language means "respect."
I really don't think that my God who created me to be His companion as well as His watchdog of His creations and who sent His Son to die a cruel death after being tortured relentlessly so that I could spend eternity with Him wants me to be scared of Him.

I like the word AWE, we are and should be in "awe" of the Lord.
Webster:
Main Entry: 1awe
Pronunciation: 'o
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English, from Old Norse agi; akin to Old English ege awe, Greek achos pain
1 : an emotion variously combining dread, veneration, and wonder that is inspired by authority or by the sacred or sublime
So to me fear is to recognize, what little that we can, the POWER and Authourity of God. That should strike a type of fear in the hearts of sinful men (us). Also should give us a begining of understanding to the depths of what Jesus did and to depths of Gods love. So in my opinion its a great combination of emotions. Fear being part of it.

Great definitions by everyone!
I really liked that post, gr0undz3r0. I believe there should be a combination. Of course we should not be terrified of God! But I think we should have an understanding and appreciation for how powerful God is, and that if we want to be afraid of something, it should not be pear pressure or all this other stuff, it should be hell fire. /forum/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Like Jesus says:
Mt 10:28
And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
The bible says that sinners make a mock of sin. This is because they do not truly understand the reprocutions of their actions, on earth, and in the world to come.
Pr 1:7 - Show Context
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Ps 111:10 - Show Context
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.
So I believe if we really understand that the end of sin is death—of relationships, of finances, and eventually, our own bodies and souls—then we would be wise to avoid it!
