so I sprained my wrist. and I was told to "put ice on it" The pain isnt too bad but does hurt just enough to make riding my bike a pain. Anyway ICE - what does it do to promote healing, or is it only for pain or swelling. Anyone know what ICe does to a sprain?
Thanx guy - and Again Great Site

Hi,
Ice is usually part of the RICE-treatment (Rest, ice, compression and elevation (RICE) ).
An ice pack is in fact an anti-inflammatory treatment; used appropriately, icing has been shown to significantly decrease healing time.
Keep in mind that when you have an injury, there is an inflammatory reaction: blood rushes to the region bringing inflammatory cells and substances (as well as washing away other substances). Connective tissue replaces lost/damaged tissue. Usually ice is mentioned, which is great (RICE is better). That's why you shouldn't take NSAID's the first 48 hours (inflammatory reaction is necessary). Afterwards, connective tissue needs to be more elastic and needs to be carefully stretched and actually, ice wouldn't be so good anymore, heat would.
But, that's a bit off topic and more for muscle injuries.
Feel free to correct me anyone I might of made a mistake.

Right on - I iced it and rested it for the first 48 - and it was so much better. I am stretching it slowly and no more ice. Its seems as though this ice / RICE thing is great.
Thanx.

Mostly all it helps with is make the sweeling come out.

so after 48 hrs you should try to not only use heat but also try to stretch muscles that have been strained??
i want to know because I heavily strained my calves about 4 days ago and they are still ACHING. i can barely walk
