View Full Version : Good ol' shoulder pain.

My left shoulder has always been a bit troublesome. First to injure, last to heal. I blame it on sleeping on that side for so many years.
Did chest Tuesday last week and shoulders on Saturday. Tried to do chest today. Still sore in the left shoulder, which wouldn't normally be an issue except that the soreness was bothersomely intense upon starting my first set of light flyes, 3 reps and I called the set and switched to Bis and forearms. Even at that my shoulder is aching now. I'll have to ice it at lunch.
Seeing as this is only my third week after a year off, while increasing the weight each session, I was still selecting weights to be able to complete 30 reps without going to failure. I figured I was going to get my first injury free start.

Maybe I should have gone for 20 rep max instead?

Have you seen a doctor regarding this problem? This sounds like a serious problem and will considerably hinder any goals you may have including getting through a set without pain. I would say get it checked out ASAP. How is your form? Have you ever had surgery or anything? This is obviously not a problem that is going to be solved with rep shemes or lifting principles, especially if this is a problem you have had for some time now.

yeah...if you've taken a year off and it's still giving you problems, i think you definitely need to get it checked out.

Been checked, x-rayed, massaged, iced, rested heated. It just likes to "tweak" itself occasionally and there is nothing really apparent as a root cause. It feels more musclular right now so I think I somehow just over did it on shoulder day. It also doesn't hurt when not loaded so all will be fine.
Ice packs were all warm, kids and wife icing headaches on the weekend, I think. Had to use some frozen vegatables.
Oh, The year off had nothing to do with injuries, although it certainly gave my knee a good recovery. My shoulder has been fine the whole time and I'm quite certain that it will be back in operation by this weekend.
Jeff.
If Doc says there is no injury then make sure you spend a little extra time warming up. Especially the shoulders. Also consider a warm down after your routines. This might help get blood circulated, etc.
I would also try starting with some lower weight and builing up to some intense weight. Meaning do a week of light weights...focus on form...then slowly start to rack it up. This way your muscles don't get freak by the sudden intensity.

HBK, that's what I had started with, as I already know, from experience, to start light. I always watch my form, although no mirrors in the new digs yet.
I had been relaxing the shoulder, did tris and abs today and Bis and abs Tuesday, I know, weird split but it was to keep the shoulder out of it.
Back from an appointment today to check a problem in my hand, just an annoying misalignment. Asked about my shoulder while at it. Turns out most of the trouble isn't shoulder at all, but bicep. This explains why the pain was where it was, but I'd have sworn it was shoulder related. Also explains why it kept up, did Bis AFTER the trouble started, funny it didn't really give me any trouble then...
I Expect that I overstretched on my flyes trying to get a good chest WO and pulled my bis in the process. Note: must remember not to keep the arms so straight for flyes, yet.
Jeff.
