My right knee's been bugging me for a little while now. When I was younger both my knees and ankles gave me trouble because I was heavier and in worse shape, but I havent had any pain or swelling in my ankles or knees in a good while, like years.

Anyways, awhile back, maybe 2-3 months ago, my right knee started bugging me. It wasn't too bad, it didn't hurt when I moved my knee in a hinge-like motion, like extending my leg out, but sometimes I'd get a sharp pain when I would try to pivot on my knee or put any kind of pressure from the side, it's hard to explain, but it hurts like on the outer part of the knee, kind of where it dips in, towards the side of your leg. It feels like there's a much bigger "dip" in my right knee than my left knee, which gives me no trouble at all. Like I said, it's tough to explain.

Anyways, like an idiot I didn't go to the doctor, and sure enough, for the past couple weeks it's been hurting to just bend my knee regularly. Not so much most of the time, but every now and then it hurts so bad that it's hard to bend my knee at all. I'm going to the doctor Friday to get it looked at, it sucks because I haven't been able to really work my quads and I've had to take it easy on cardio.

Anyone have any idea what it is? It's like a sharp pain, not directly on my knee cap, but just to the outside of it, closer out to the side of my leg. I'm thinking it's something cartilage related, I'm obviously no expert though. Anyone who thinks they have any idea of what this is know tough it would be to rehab or repair it?

Sounds to me like you are going to need an MRI. The only way they are going to really know what is going on, if it does not show up on X-Ray which I am sure it will not, is by taking an MRI.

I have had two major knee reconstructions on my right knee and currently have a torn menisus ligament in my right knee that is awaiting a future surgery date of my choosing, in other words as long down the road as I can prolong it. I know how to deal with torn ligaments, as anymore it is like second nature to me.

So, sounds to me like you may have torn a ligament. Maybe not completely, but partially. If it is a partial tear you could get scoped which is a day thing and the recovery is little to none. But an MRI is needed to be for certain, otherwise the ortho doc is just going to be twist your leg around something fierce and feel for any looseness or giving sensations, and they are not always right, but most of the time have a pretty good idea.

Is there any popping or catching like feelings? Do you have trouble doing certain movements? Does pressure, heat, or ice take the pain away? Is it around the knee cap, under it, to the inside or rear of the leg, what is the outside mean? Can you kneel down, ride a bike, run, jump, skip, hop, what are your limitations?

The pain is like right beside my knee cap on the right side on the outside of the leg. It feels more external than something that would maybe been under my knee cap. Also another thing I noticed is when I try to flex my leg out, like straighten it out at the knee joint, like in leg extensions, it doesn't hurt without any resistance, but if I put resistance on it, it REALLY hurts.

As far as what I can do, I usually don't have a problem running in a straight line, but when I go to move from side to side or to pivot on my leg it hurts, like if I ever get pressure from the side it hurts. It also hurts to run or even walk or just bend my knee sometimes, but only every once in awhile and it usually goes away if I keep bending my knee to stretch it out.

If I sit down or stand in one place for a long time, then it REALLY hurts and limits my mobility, and it hurts to even move my leg at the knee joint period, but that usually goes away if I keep bending my knee, but it always hurts when I put side pressure on it, like say I was running and I went to turn, and I push off with my right foot laterally instead of just a forward motion, then it hurts like hell always, even when I'm stretched out.

It almost looks like my knee cap is popped out of place. It's hard to explain, but if you notice, everyone's leg has a little dip in it right beside the knee cap on the outside of the leg, but my right leg has a much more noticable "dip" beside the knee cap. The pain feels kinda like it is right around the top of my tibia where it meets the femur on the outer portion, so it could be the tendon there between the femur and tibia, or maybe the meniscus.

It seems like you have the same thing as me, but not quite. I dont get sharp pains. Sometimes, when i bend me knee, it hurts really bad. If i dont hurt it though, its fine until i do lol. If i press on the outside of my knee (right side) it hurts my knee alot, so my pain is also external. The doctor said i have tendonitis.

Its usually good for a while, until i fall on my knee or do something that places pressure on it.
