View Full Version : Why does running hurt so much?!

No, I don't mean the hurt during running as that's a different story, but for some reason after the past couple of times I've gotten up early in the morning with my training partner to run for an hour (something I never enjoy but I know is good for me especially while bulking), my feet hurt like crazy hours afterwards!! It's getting ridiculous, it just feels as if the bone structure of my foot and the in-step are just bruised and it hurts to walk.

Massaging the area and icing it seems to help but it's still a royal pain. I can't imagine doing leg work with this (good thing I don't have time to get in my leg day this week)... I'll also have some pain in the shins but not nearly as bad as the foot. I should also note that the pain is mostly in the left leg and foot. Am I just running with bad form? I find this happens much more when running on asphalt outside rather than when I run for similar durations on the treadmill. Any ideas?

Could be the way you run, could be your shoes, could just be the shock of the asphault not giving when your foot lands. Running is a great exercise but it doesn't come without a price. If you run a lot for long durations and don't experience some kind of pain, consider yourself blessed...I've experienced severe foot pain for awhile and tried to fight through it...didn't work and I did a lot of suffering..and the pain moved up to my knees and then my hips. I was icing then daily, getting cortision shots..the only thing that helped was to stop running which was a really big sacrifice. I did stair climber and eliptical for a while and now that the pain in my feet has gone away(over a year later) I can occasionally run but always on a treadmill and whenever I even think I feel pain in my feet I'll shut down the running immediately. As much as I love to run, that kind of pain is just not worth it.
So be patient and as boring as it is, do most of your running on a treadmill or at least stay off the roads and run on grass or footpaths..

I always get a pain in my hip and foot. Thats why I never run, I cycle, its much easier on the joints.

That's strange that the treadmill hurt ur feet less, I thought running on a treadmill put extra stress on ur ankels. It might be possible ur running too much, and cronus is right about cycling putting less stress on ur joints. I guess if u like to run alot switch between cycling.

you have a fallen arch. (flat feet), some orthotics should help. see a pediatrist /forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Question: Is that an exaggeration of an estimation for the time or do you seriously run for an hour straight? I can't possibly imagine running for a whole hour and not feeling the slightest bit of pain afterwards. Especially when you're running on asphalt.

Definitely. Back in the day when I played a lot of sports, I used to have lots of feet problems during and after running. Eventually I went to see a podiatrist, got proper orthotics (like $400) and have never looked back.
