View Full Version : Going into Shock while lifting

Hey guys. From my knowledge I seem to be going into shock while lifting heavy weights. It happens when I do deadlifts, squats and legpress.
The symptoms are
Rapid heart rate
Pale clammy skin
Cold sweat (I'm hot but cold)
dry mouth
bad stomach (I wait at least an hour before i workout)
I can't see a reason why this would be shock, after all I'm subject my body to extremes and its probably its relation to keep me in homeostasis right?
Whats the experts opinions on this and is it ok to keep training heavy if I am going into shock. (My rep range when this happens is 6 - 10, and I'm really making myself work hard)
Doesn't happen on anything else besides squats, deadlifts, heavy leg press.
cheers

Your pre-workout meal might be bad, what is it? You also might not be breathing right.

Heavy training can produce the same effects as the beginning stages of shock.
Shock is a condition in which the circulation of blood is seriously disturbed. For instance, if somebody were to chop their hand off ( /forum/images/graemlins/ooo.gif), the body would put itself into shock, forcing the blood from the extremities into the core, to conserve blood supply and aid the stressed vital organs.
When you do big lower body movements, you are in a sense putting your body into a state of shock, because you are requiring massive amounts of oxygenated blood to flood the biggest muscles you have. When you're squatting double your body weight, your body knows that it is pretty much a life or death situation for your muscles to work properly, so it will divert blood from other areas in your body to achieve survival.
This is pretty normal and shouldn't be a huge problem, just back off a tiny bit until your cardiovascular system gets used to the increased load. Who said cardio was just for cutting?
And to think some people still argue that the diversion of blood to the stomach while ingesting a shake DURING a workout is insignificant... HA!

hey thanks for that crazy-t, might do a bit of swimming and running to boost my cardiovascular endurance. Anyone who has done highschool lvl humanbiology that having a shake while workingout is just stupid!
How are you meant to digest when your blood is else where?

I would advise to get a complete physical and see if there is anything wrong. Tell your doctor what you have been experiencing. It would be good if the doctor was an internist and also specialize in cardiovascular diseases and sports medicine.
Sometimes the body warns if it is too much for the body and your symptoms may be not normal.
yeah i've had similar symptoms....but i was supersetting heavy deadlifts with pull-ups. so guess that explains it heh.

thx for the advices guy, and I haven't just started lifting i've been doing it for 2yrs almost now and been deadlifting almost the whole time. This is only a fairly recent occurance, I'll get a medical from a sports doc.
bit offended of the "workout" comment yu.
uhm is it normal seeing "stars" after a heavy set of deadlifts? I mean it sometimes happens to me, but goes away after a few seconds

Don't worry about it man, it looks like it was just said in jest. I haven't been here for that long, but I know that none of the mods on these boards would deliberately put down a fellow bodybuilder.
Dirt off ya shoulda...haha /forum/images/graemlins/cool.gif

How are your breathing techniques while you lift? Some of my swimmers see stars when they do "under-water"drills which consist of swimming under water for as many lengths of the pool as they can. Sometimes, not always, some of them will see stars before they surface, obviously meaning a lack of oxygen.
Maybe you aren't breathing correctly when you do your dl's.
I will start concentrating more on breathing during the left from now on, thanks for the quick reply.

Yeah...
Yes, being truthful is a very good thing. If only one of the attributes of every man alive was that they are truthful, we would live in a very different world. But there is a difference between being truthful and being degrading. Your comment, though it may be truthful, was degrading.
I guess, all I know is that if I was experiencing these symptoms:
Rapid heart rate
Pale clammy skin
Cold sweat (I'm hot but cold)
dry mouth
bad stomach
and had NO IDEA why, and came to a forum thats basis is sound advice from a Christian stand point and was put down for being worried, I would be hurt as well. I would be offended if I took the risk of asking a personal question in front of thousands on the internet and was put down and be littled by a moderator.
I'm sorry. I don't even know the man who posted this question; I have never met him, talked to him, or even know his name, but I can't sit here and just pretend that I am okay with how this issue was treated. Yes, by posting this message in the boards(I cant send a personal message because I am not a member. And I also hope that my not being a member doesn't negate the fact that I feel this was handled poorly), I could be kicked off of these boards, but its worth it because if the mods will not stand up for this guy, then I will. This was not handled approproately and for that I apologize.

Oh, and I hope this is not seen as a "petty, immature squable." I scarcely think deliberately putting a man down is a petty nor immature matter.
Awesome

If the admins are curt with you it's because they have dealt with 28858 other members, and it's changed their reactions to some people. While it may not have been the nicest thing to say, it doesn't matter because you will not be able to win an argument with Joe. I'd suggest to just realize that Yu is a tough guy, who makes tough comments sometimes, and drop it...I really don't think he meant to really offend you.

Aidan and Lost Sheep, I read Yu's comment and I did not thought it was offensive. He thought it was just a "workout".
Some people can seem to be obsessive in pursuing the bodybuilding sports to the point that they are not concerned that if they are throwing up after they do certain extreme workouts but they are happy that they are pushing to the max.
With me, I learned to be conservative after going through several health issues and emotional and social issues from the sports.
That is why I advised to get a physical and see what is up.
The Mentzer brothers were amazing bodybuilders but they died of cardiovascular diseases.
Today I met a pharmaceutical rep who was out for several months because he had hernia surgery (he said something about inguinal hernia and etc). I asked him how he got it ? He was so young.
He said he was doing squats. And it happened during the squats. He wsa doing 225 pounds total. That reminded of a picture I saw of someone doing a squat and then all the internal innards came out of him...that was YUCK !! GROSS !!!

hey guys. l0stsheep, I agree with you and thanks for standing by me. It might be a bit tough but you have to cope some things on the chin.
Some may not find it offending but my context makes it offending, as I work very hard in the gym everytime and make the majority of others look like they are walking through the park. But I accept Yu's point.
end of discussion as far as I'm concerned and thats for answering my enquiring.
