I have suffered from shin splints for some time now. Whenever I run for a long time, or get into a good routine of running, my shin splint will act up.

The pain I'm feeling in my calves doesnt feel like shin splints now, though. The pain is in the back of my leg, in the calf muscle itself. I stretch before I run, stretch half-way through my run, and stretch after my run and it still hurts. I even feel the pain during the day, with my running usually coming at night. I can feel small bulges(about 2 of them) in the muscle when I rub my muscle right near the tibia, in my inner leg.

Is this still a symptom of shin splints? Or could this be something else? Could it just be muscle cramps?

You said that your experiencing the pain in the back of the calf muscle. Then you said that the bulges are near the Tibia, which would be on the inside of your leg. The two different spots can indicate different problems. So I'm just curious as to which spot is the main problem, or is it both?

yeah sorry...my whole calf hurts when I run or sometimes even just walking. But I do also feel bulges near the tibia. Sometimes it just feels like my whole calf is on fire, which is the main problem. I just metioned the bulges because I didnt know if that would be important to know. I don't think I tore it or anything either.

Have your tried doing a BENT knee calf stretch to get your achilles tendon?

If you have bulges in your muscle you should see a phyiotherapist or doctor. You might have a cramp and need deep tissue massage to get that out.

If the problem has been hanging around for a while, I would get it checked out by a doctor. A lot depends on the intensity of the pain, and if it backs off after you run or if it stays. Personally I kept running on bad shin splints which in-turn turned into a stress fracture followed by a complete break. That's not to say you are anywhere near that point, as mine was an extreme case, however it never hurts to ask for a bone scan to determine exactly what's goin on in there. It will give you some piece of mind and allow you to make the necessary changes in your training. Also, as mentioned earlier, seeing a qualified physiotherapist can do wonders.

yeah I just saw a Dr. who said that with ice and rest, the pain should go away. If not, he recommended seeing a physical therapist. The pain is getting better now. Thanks for the replies.
