View Full Version : Remembering the days before ABC

Just wanted to see if anyone else remembers being so misinformed back in the day that it's funny to think about it now.

Thinking back i rememeber when i wanted to lose weight so bad i was working out 4-6 days a week at 150lbs with a 1200-1500cal diet! I was ALWAYS hungry and didn't even know what fiber was at the time. Anyways the funny story to it was one night the hunger got so out of control that i decided to get a bowl of cereal at like midnight ( oh no carbs at night! i'me gonna be fat in the morning! lol ). The funny part of the story was that i ended up eating 2 boxes ( yes boxes ) of cereal that night before going to bed. If only i could keep that hunger going for this bulk i would be set /forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Anyways, any of you got any cool stories to tell?

I was fat and insisted on bulking. I was close to 30% bodyfat and lifted bi, tri, and chest everyday. I overworked badly. It was a joke. I was 15 at the time. I neglected my diet, body, everything really.

back in high school the weight room was open Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays. My buddys and I would flat bench, incline, curls, pull downs, and maybe some abs. In that order every day the weight room was open....

My workouts were always pretty good but my nutrition was awful. When I was 16-18 I though nothing of eating 2 or even 3 choclate bars a day (mars and snickers my particular vices).

Pre-abc I never ate oatmeal either! or natty PB!

I was always pretty informed on the nutrition side because of wrestling and the Marines but my workouts have definately improved. The biggest area abc has helped me with though is my Spiritual growth. There's some awesome role models here!!!

Before abc...I had been playing with the macro percentages for my diet...and doing periodization based on what "felt" like it worked..Still, diet was mostly based on the piramid..I didn't know what wild rice was...I ate oatmeal with milk and sugar..You know the deal.

Oh yes, before abc, I had no idea what DOMS was or if it was to be expected, I did not know anything about Bulking or cutting...lol

But the basic idea of HIT I got it from Fit for Life program.

Gibbster

I had started to follow the HIT'ers. Mon-Wed-Fri. Compound movements ONLY.

I was eating alright after awhile and actually made some good progress.

This was more recent. I do however remember following the Cybergenics Phase 1 system a long time ago. (10 years or so)

Eating all their supplements. Not following their diet. Being so hungry all the time that I would eat enormous amounts of food.

One night I cooked up what I thought was nearly a weeks supply of chicken. Bar-B-Q'd an entire bulk package then phoned my mom. I was eating while I talked to her and I ate the entire package without realizing it.
Supper would consist of a whole box of Kraft Dinner, a jar of canned salmon, and half a pound of fried bacon.

I'm amazed I was in the shape I was. Puny yes, but I had my first 6 pack in those days. 5'8 maybe 165 lbs.

Even after finding ABC, it was only until this last 6 months I really threw my faith into the site and am probably in better muscular shape then I have ever been, lifting heavier then ever. Now I'm going to knock off all the chubb to reap the rewards.

I was in the same rut as bsimpson. But i found the bulk and cut method on my own /forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif. I figured, "Calories and Carbs will help me gain weight so why don't I eat a lot for awhile, get pretty big, then go on a diet and lose all the fat."

I bulked up to 185lbs, then cut down to 165. That's where I'm at now but baseball conditioning keeps me from actually doing anything. 4 days a week 1 1/2 hours of pure non-stop running. I throw up daily and feel completely exhausted and I've lost a little weight and a lot of muscle. 3 more weeks and its over then back to a bulk. I'm gonna get huuuuuuuuuge /forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif

What are you, a girl or something? /forum/images/graemlins/mad.gif

You're supposed to be a cool admin here, Venom - you can only use * * to describe an action only when chatting or writing one on one with a girl, never in public.

You should have put it this way:

"This is a great thread! I'm gonna put this one as a sticky!"

or

"This thread rocks! Sticky!"

or maybe

"Go ahead. Make my day by posting in this sticky-thread."

Or something...

My PWO shake before ABC (yes I actually had one) -

chocolate whey, ice cream, milk, flax, crushed up glucosamine tablet

/forum/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I was taking the words 'dirty bulk' to the extreme as well. Fast food, fried food, pizza, etc. Increased the calories but did not clean up the diet at all.

The days before ABC....where to start?
Back in high school a buddy and I used to consume a PREworkout shake consisting of milk, icecream, bananas, strawberries and about 1 scoop of whey in the blender.
We would then proceed to workout, rarely increasing the weight. Our workouts varied from full body workouts to split style workouts depending on "how we felt" or what we had heard was the best way most recently. We did NO pullups, NO squats ( we went for a few runs, that was all we needed /forum/images/graemlins/crazy.gif )Aot of workouts inevitably consisted of largely bench press and curls.

Needless to say there wasn't alot of gains made.

Well, I was lurking here when there was like 10 people here. I used to bounce back and forth between this place, bodybuilding.com, t-nation.com, and even rippedmass.com. After a little bit of reading the prez's articles, and seeing all the dedication that went on around here, and seeing how serious and committed he was to making this little crappy site with nobody on it work, and seeing his knowledge I was leaning a certain way. I then saw that all those other sites were packed with juice monkeys who did'nt have to do much to hit 220, and reading the prez's, animals, venoms, articles on how to get there and seeing they hated gear, I was pretty much set, then I stumbled across a bible study and that made my mind up for me....I remember the whole history of this place, I've been here since I was about 12...and i'm turning 18....I never had the dedication through those years to apply what I learned, but I was basically at my computer reading for at least an hour or 2 a day for 5 years, I learned alot, and as I learned to apply it, it was unreal.....people wondered how I could get so big at 16, when they were all 135lbs and I was 170. It was funny...my worst memory is when we shut down for like a week to re-do the site, man that feels like so long ago....

I'd be interested in reading the history of abcbodybuilding.com. Basically how and why President Wilson decided to put this site together and how he met the other mods and got them involved too. I've picked up bits and pieces while being a member here but it would still be awesome to see an actual story about it in my opinion.

Oh man....it's such a big chunk of my life spent here in reflection of it all..alot of these guys kept me on track, and they did'nt know it once and awile, they were like parents in a way to me. They still kinda are, I know that I can talk to Prez, Yu, Venom, OS, Noz....they all got their traits that I love....

Prez: One of the most humble men I've met in my opinion and so well versed.

Yu: Straight to the point, i'm oldshool family oriented so I love how he's blatant and blunt, and almost rough with me, haha....I appreciate it all, like a parent

Venom: Reminds me of a big brother, he's very relateable and also guiding....

Oldschool:So knowledgable, wise, and very caring...

Noz: MOMMA!!!

Well those are just a few, I know a I missed alot of mods who deserve kudos...but those are alot of the people who have been around for a long time....I just relate to Noz...and her motherliness...

Anyways I sound like a poundcake so I'll shut up....But there are so many memories I have of here, it's like I was personally around these people....I remember when I'm pretty sure it was OS hurt his shoulder by catching a chubster fallin off a shed....haha...or was that rich, I just remember laughing at that...but i'm glad I could share...
and JR, it just won't be the same as first hand dude, and there is so much to write it would take like 3 issues of JHR :crazy...haha

I remember this place since 2001. I have lurked around for almost 5 years! /forum/images/graemlins/crazy.gif So many members have come and gone. I enjoyed reading their posts within the threads of the forums. It was very entertaining and educational at the same time.

I read all the articles from the beginning, some of which don't even exist anymore, to the present. (Well...I must admit that I haven't read the articles in the past couple of months since I haven't really made the time to do it.) The articles have grown with each release of the journal, and so had my knowledge of bodybuilding.

Unfortunately, before now I never thought to use my knowledge. /forum/images/graemlins/frown.gif However, due to recent events, I decided that I would finally do something bodybuilding related and thus decided to become an actual member this year. I am turning 19 this year and have chosen to get into the best shape I can possibly get. My grandma died of diabetes in the summer of 2004 and that was quite the eye-opener for me.

I found ABC in my search on how to build biceps. /forum/images/graemlins/tongue.gif Not that I ever did the exercises, not consistently anyway. One time before ABC I had developed a "workout routine" that involved doing the same ten exercises every single day. I overtrained badly, yet saw some results, but minor ones. That lasted maybe one month before I gave up and decided to watch TV all day instead. My PWO routine consisted to drinking lots of water and then going to sleep. I even cut back on food that I ate thinking the less I ate the more muscle I would gain.../forum/images/graemlins/confused.gif Yeah, I know. /forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Despite my lack of motivation to train and practice the bodybuilding lifestyle, I was very interested in reading about it. I became so interested in it that I even decided to pursue studies in the closest thing to it. My major is Kinesiology and Health Science now.

Not only has ABC inspired me to pursue studies in health related areas, but it was because of this site that I picked up my first copy of the Bible. I have done lots of reading on Christianity and the Bible in my spare time. The more I read, the more it made sense to me, and the more I believed in it. I don't know if I am yet truly a Christian, but I do know that I become more of a believer with each passing day.

Before ABC I did not believe in evolution in the sense that we came from apes and a rock before that. But the more I heard about it in school, the more I believed in it, even though I never felt right admitting "we come from apes, have vestigial organs in our body, are just little pieces of dust in the big picture, and will just die one day and that's it". ABC showed me that I was right to feel weird, that there really is a God who has created us. There were always subtle signs that let me know there was a God watching over me anyway. I feel blessed for that. He guides you even if you're not sure what to believe.

Those are my memories of my time before ABC.
