While doing cardio this morning I was thinking. Does ego meld into self-confidence to some degree. Or are they both seperate entities and never cross, and are indepdent of each other.

Me personally, this is the way I view it. They do combine into each other, but only to a certain degree, but there are both extremes on each end of the spectrum. Like you can't have a huge ego without having enough self confidence to never question your flaws.

What do you think?

I think some people have big egos to compensate for their lack of self confidence or insecurities. Example would be the gym "showoff" who screams, wears flashy and tight clothing and uses heavier weights than he can manage just to attract attention.

I think these people are overcompensating for their low confidence in other aspects of their life so when they step in the gym they feel more comfortable to showoff what they think they are good at.

Obviously doesn't apply to everyone and I am no psychologist...just an observation.

I think ego and confidence do cross over somewhat...but when I think of ego I think of image and character...when I think of confidence I think of self assurance and poise.
Ego is so strongly associated with arogance and conceit, where confidence is associated belief and acomplishment. /forum/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Ego is normally an exaggerated sense of your own importance and a feeling of superiority to other people where as Confidence is a belief or self-assurance in your ability to succeed.

I think ego can be self destructive where as confidence productive and fruitful.

What sits above these 2 feelings would be your morals and the glasses in which you see the world through, i.e. your place in life and your place around others.

If you know your place in life then confidence can flow fruitfully in your own parameters and you could really enjoy life however if you out step those bounds and try to be something your not and larger than your own existence in reality then that’s ego.

confidence is inherrently peaceful. you have found your center and balence and so you will not be moved. Ego is thinking you have achived this or trying to make other people think you have achived this.

Ego has no honor. Confidence is soft and quiet, dignified but respectful, strong yet genial, tolerant yet hard.

Self-confidence is a manifestation of ego. Only self-confidence begets self-fufilling prophecy. Ego is essential to sucess, without ego self-confidence is hollow. However allowing one's ego to be seen is at ones discretion.

it all ties into self-asteem... healthy ego + confidence = healthy self asteem.
