Yesterday... all my troubles seemed so far away
Now it looks as though they’re here to stay
Oh, I believe in yesterday.

Suddenly... I’m not half the man I used to be,
There’s a shadow hanging over me.
Oh, yesterday came suddenly.

Why she had to go I don’t know she woldn’t say.
I said something wrong, now I long for yesterday.

Yesterday, love was such an easy game to play.
Now I need a place to hide away.
Oh, I believe in yesterday.

Mm mm mm mm mm.

I'll just list the top ten I can think of:

1. Wonderful World (Loui Armstrong)
2. Lady in Red (Chris Deberg)
3. Amazing Grace
4. Your Song (Elton John)
5. The Dance (Garth Brooks)
6. Fire and Rain (James Taylor)
7. Father and Son (Cat Stevens)
8. Help! (Beatles)
9. Behind Closed Doors (Tom Jones)
10. That's my job (Conway Twitty)

Lyrics for Conway Twitty's That's my Job:

I woke up crying, late at night,
When I was very young.
I had dreamed my father,
had passed away and gone.
My world revovled around him.
I couldn't lie there anymore.
So I made my way,
Down the mirrored hall,
And tapped upon his door.
And I said :
"Daddy, I'm so afraid,
How will I go on with you gone that way?
Don't want to cry anymore.
So may I stay with you?"
And he said :
"That's my job.
That's what I do.
Everything I do is because of you,
To keep you safe with me.
That's my job you see."

Later we barely got along,
This teenage boy and he.
Most of the fights it seems,
Were over different dreams,
We each held for me.
He wanted knowledge and learning.
I wanted to fly out west.
Said I could make it out there,
If I just had the fare,
I got half will you loan me the rest?
And I said :
"Daddy, I'm so afraid.
There's no garuntee,
In the plans I've made.
And if I should fail?
Who will pay my way back home?"
And he said :
"That's my job.
That's what I do.
Everything I do is because of you,
To keep you safe with me.
That's my job you see."

Every person carves his spot,
And fills the hole with light.
And I pray someday I might,
Light as bright as he.

Woke up early one bright fall day,
To spread the tragic news.
After all my travel,
I settled down,
Within a mile or two.

I make my living with words and ryhme.
And all this tragedy,
Should go into my head,
And out instead,
As bits of poetry.
But I say:
"Daddy, I'm so afraid,
How will I go on,
With you gone this way?
How can I come up,
With a song to say I love you?
That's my job.
That's what I do.
Everything I do is because of you,
To keep you safe with me.
That's my job you see.
Everything I do is because of you,
To keep you safe with me."

There's a ton more I could list but these never get old for me.

I am going to have to chime in with a song that's special to me. It's "Beautiful People" by Rusted Root, off of When I Woke.

Come and hear the funeral marching
Maybe this is your suicide
Maybe this is more pure
Pure than simple
Maybe this is all I have for home

The reason the song is special for me is because I have listened to this entire album a million times. We used to play it all the time in the bike shop when I was maybe 22-23, the year after I graduated from college and started grad school. When we first got married, we lived in this little apartment over in Urbana. The bathroom had this nasty maize-colored shower surround, and we had a CD player in there, and I used to listen to the album every morning getting ready to go to work.

That summer was probably the most fun I've ever had in my life, no homeworks, no research, no responsibilities except getting up and working. Riding every day, working at something I enjoyed every day...every time I hear the song I can vividly see every detail of that bathroom, even the patch in the shower surround. /forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif For me, that album is everything good about that time in my life, and I wish I could go back there.

I feel like that was a million years and another lifetime ago. It's depressing sometimes, when you think about how much time has gone by. I'm almost done with school, but sometimes I feel like it has destroyed my life and there's nothing to do but finish and keep going until the bitter end.
