ONLY my friend..

A friend of mine from work was out furniture shopping right after finishing working out & teaching a cycling class. She picked out a few things, was heading back to her truck to get her credit card, and fell down the outside stairs into the street. She broke her leg and fractured her ankle, and bruised up her wrist pretty bad. No one from the store saw, and no passersby helped. She took a while to get herself upright, while all muddy and dirty.

So what did she do? She hopped back into the store and paid for her stuff!

If you knew this lady, you wouldn't be surprised; she's a real card! She's doing fine and is all bandaged up and in a wheelchair, laughing about it all as per her demeanor.

First thing she said to me was that she was upset that she can't work out her legs, run, or do much if any cardio for a while. Hardcore! /forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif

She was, however, back in the gym this morning in her wheelchair doing dumbbell shoulder presses! Atta girl! I told her I'd have been right there with her if I broke my leg.

Any of you have any cool stories like that?

That truely is hardcore I must say. I've broke my femur five times, and I can say I never felt like doing anything for a few weeks afterwards. After my last ATV accident and a metal rod from my knee to my hip, and plates and rods holding my back together I started working out like 3 months after the accident. Not as hardcore as your story, but I do consider myself more determined then some.

I slipped on ice this weekend. Down 15 or so concrete stairs. The bursa sac in my left hip burst, the bone bruised, a few tendons ripped away from the bone, my right wrist strained, left forearm bone bruised, and overall whiplash.

Haven't been in the gym yet. But, I intend to as soon as I can walk normally and sit for more than two hours without pain.

I did work only legs for 3 months after a shoulder injury kept me from hitting upper body. But, no wheelchairs were involved. Ooooh! I did stiff leg deadlifts with a cast on my arm. Does that count? I also helped two people move (weird how they call two guys and me!) with the same cast.

my friend my senior broke his foot playing basketball and he had to get a cast on it. what did he do when his leg day came around, he was in the cage doing squats. probably not the best thing for him to be doing but i dont think he cared either all that much.

Oh, not that much since it was SLDL's. I don't remember exactly but I'm sure it wasn't more than 115.

Absolutely. Of course there is a fine line between hardcore and insanity (JP erased that line for himself a while ago, actually).

A friend of mine at the gym will always miss workouts because he was out and had a drink, which usually leads to a few drinks and a hangover /forum/images/graemlins/crazy.gif That's as unhardcore as you can be, this side of going out and drinking PRE-PLANNED!

What's funny about him, is his new year's resolution was to stop that crap and hit the gym more - and he's been in the gym LESS ever since.

I've come close to falling down the stairs while leaving the gym, but that's no surprise! Luckily I haven't really injured myself ever, so I can't really match up to some of this /forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Mine's not that good...

I totally turned my foot sideways and couldn't walk on it. But I hopped to the trainer and told him to tape me up anyways. We was playing my rival in soccer and no way was I sitting out. He told me I couldn't play and refused to wrap me. I put on a nasty looking brace and went out anyways. He tried appealing to my coach who knew me better than that and said I'd play in a cast (so true). The trainer was like alrite and offered to tape me up, but I wasn't trying to take off what I out on, that'd take too long and probably hurt /forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif So we played the game, I stayed in back and did my duty. We went to overtime and coach said, Megan, go up there and show em how it's done. Woo hoo, sudden death goal. I think I ran off the field and collapsed *sweet* It's all good, I don't have ligaments or tendons in my ankles anymore. They're just made out of rubber now... /forum/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Meg just reminded me of when I played hockey with a concussion, prior to going for medical attention & stitches /forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I had a huge gash in the back of my head which I earned by fainting in the middle of the night and crackin' it against a sharp edge of a table. I didn't know how bad it was at the time, so I just stopped the bleeding after a while and went back to bed. Woke up, pillow was all bloody /forum/images/graemlins/shocked.gif I had to play, though, and I actually won the argument with my mother about it. We went to the hospital after the game (we won, I got a hat trick) and the doctors were not too happy /forum/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Lets see:

1) A horse I was working with bucked me off and I landed straight on my head. I rolled over in the dirt and started to crawl on my hands and knees towards the loose horse, and my arms gave way and I got another face full of dirt. Someone in the ring on their horse asked if I needed help or anything getting back in to the barn. I said "No, I'm getting back on and making him do what he didn't want to do. THEN I'll stop." Dizzily got horse, got back on and rode for another 15 minutes. When my parents drove me home I mentioned my "headache" and took an Advil. Next day we went to the ER where it was found I had a concussion. Docs said if I hadn't been wearing my riding hekmet, I'd most likely be dead or paralyzed.
2) My horse and I were going pretty fast around a muddy turn and he slipped and fell on me (he's 1200 pounds). Once we got up, I grabbed hold of him and used him as a crutch to get me back to the barn. I grabbed a horse bandage, wrapped my foot, checked to make sure Splash was ok, took off the saddle, and got back on to finish what we were doing. I'd broken my foot and all my toes except my big one.
3) When I broke my ankle and had surgery on it, it would've sidelined me from riding for over 3 months. The heck with that. I was riding (and jumping) a few days after with my cast-up leg (complete with newly placed screw).

Whilst I've never done anything like that myself (having never been injured, touch wood) I've seen a couple of hardcore people at my gym:
1) There was a guy who had a broken leg in a cast, and for about 2 months he worked out all the time, using crutches to move around the gym.
2) Another guy I saw, and this one takes the cake really, only had one leg, and yet he was still in the squat rack, doing ONE LEGGED SQUATS with a barbell on his shoulders. How he kept balance I'm not sure. And to think there are people with two perfectly functional legs who are scared of squatting, and this guy was working out with only one /forum/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

My senior year of football I broke my hand in the first quarter, dislocated my shoulder in the 2nd(happened all the time), had a concussion in the 2nd, and started experiencing heat exhaustion in the end of the 3rd. Didn't sit out one play. Then the next week after getting a cast on my hand, figured out I could tackle that well with it on so I cut it off myself.

i put a new clutch in my car over the weekend (Spec stage II). while putting the tranny back in it fell off the jack and landed on my head. oof, a very rough but, none the less "Clutch" week for me. got rid of the cat too, picked up a pound or 2 more boost. love it /forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Ouch. Don't get me started on car injuries /forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif No matter what I've done, my friend "Crazy Ben" takes the cake. He almost electrocuted himself about 5x in one summer, and almost cut half his finger off on his fan /forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif

ooh, speaking of electrocution. when i was setting my timing over the summer (using a timing gun that you place a plug wire over it at the dizzy) i reach over to turn the dizzy to adjust the timing. zap, i wake up on my garage floor, unsure of where i am or who i am for a couple of seconds, followed by a 5 hour migraine. coil packs are not to be taken lightly...

My dad bought a GTech but I had no interest in running it. I put 300/330.5 to the wheels last spring, with basically just a blower at 5-6lbs. of boost. I've added larger heads and am putting on a boost pipe (+4lbs.) when the engine gets put back together.

Wednesday September 19 2001 I had a heart valve replaced. Saturday I went home and Monday I went to the gym to see what I could do. Nothing hurt but benching and fly's. I started doing 5 bent knee pushups and worked my way up to 4 sets of 25 regular push up in two weeks.

The doc was supposed to only make a 3 inch incision but he said he had to make an eight inch incision due to my muscle mass. So I have that going for me...
