It's really hard making 6 meals a day when I'm at school all day and then am on the road for basketball so much.
For example, how about ON's MRP shake? (http://www.optimumnutrition.com/p.asp) By looking at it I'm going to guess no. Just making sure though. I'm getting desperate.
This has been covered so many times. Why would you consume a mrp consisting of whey and sugars(usually dextrose, malto, fructose in various combinations) when you can make your own meal replacement that is better for you, does not spike your insulin when you don't need to and is not a waste of money either.
Just use whey with oatmeal and peanut butter or flax and you are all set with a healthy shake that you can take anytime except for post workout and will add the calories you need.

Well I can't just bring a blender with me, and I thought I read here that you shouldn't mix whey protein with water and then leave it sit for awhile.

Correct, but still your not getting the point. I made one just 3 hours ago before my workout. I grinded 2 cups oats, 2 scoops whey, 1g vitamin C, 1tbsp flaxoil. Once its grinded up and mixed take that to work. When you need to drink it then add the water.

You can find a way to improvise. I never tried this but you can try blending whey into a fine powder and mixing it dry with whey in a shaker. When ready to drink add water and drink it. Bring peanut butter with you or flax(don't leave it too long at room temp) and mix that in if you can as well.
Ingesting a crappy mrp just because it is convenient is not the way to do things.

Just so you know, the MRP i made was over 800 calories. You can also add peanut butter instead of flax, but do it when your ready to drink it.

there are slim-fast bars, that have less than 1g of sugar, are high in fiber. lots of nutrition and a good blend of proteins in it. there pretty cheap too.
i buy a milk and egg protein. its got all the vitamins, zinc magnesium. a good blend of protein, no sugar, high fiber.
look at nutritional labels, you want low sugar, and high fiber.
homeade shakes are the cheapest, but i use the slim fast bars in minnesota, my shakes allways wind up freezing when im on the move. and i been drinking oatmeal shakes for so long now, i feel like i need a vacation from it.

You CAN grind up the oats/whey/pb with water 3 hours before drinking it, can't you?

yeah, thats fine. But don't let it sit for longer than a day or 2.
When I'm at work, I make all my shakes for that day in the morning and put them in a cooler.
The only time you don't want to pre make the shake is for the Post Workout shake. Mix water with the ingredients after the workout.

NO!...you can do all of that but add the water. Add the water when your ready to drink it.

you can mix the whey with the oats. but you most definitely cannot mix those with either PB or whey and wait 3hours prior to consumption. doing this will make the whey unstable and render the protein useless.

Why can't you grind the pb with the whey and oats? I know flax oil has to be kept refrigerated but i thought pb was fine, and then add water?

I sincerely doubt that pre-mixing whey to be consumed the same day will make protein unstable. Any scientific proof of this claim? I see no reason for any form of protein breaking down in a way that it'll lose its protein effectiveness and nutrients just because it has been pre-mixed.

The only thing you need to keep the whey from is moisture, and then maybe sunlight. You shouldn't mix the pb with it because thats moisture, and pb shouldn't be left out. So heres the shake, its quite simple:
Grind the Oats, then add the protein powder in that. Try to keep it away from the light as best as possible. When your ready to drink it, then add the flax oil and water.

So do you guys bring a bottle of flax or pb along with you?
Wouldn't the flax oil "denature" if its not kept refrigerated?
thanks

It is important to keep it refrigerated but equally important to keep it out of the sunlight, which is also one reason to keep it in the fridge. So yes take it with you and keep it in a dark place. But if your backpack gets too hot inside, that i would say no. You could always buy a small cooler to put in your back.....options are always available no matter what the dilemma.

Hey guys, do you do the same thing with your PWO shake too? Like take the whey/dextrose/malto/sodium in the shaker cup to the gym with you and then add the water when your ready to drink it?
This does seem like a bit more of a hassle, but i can't stand the thought of having a PWO shake with protein that is "unstable".

Yes this is what I do. Like i said on a recent post....I live only about a 1-2 minute walk from the gym and i still take all the ingredients premixed (without the water) to the gym.

ok thanks man, have you ever tried adding organic flaxseeds to your whey/oats? I'm not sure if they contain as much omega 3's as regular flax seed oil, but if they do that seems like a good alternative without all the moisture.
Thanks

No i havn't, although my dad used to grind up flaxseeds..anyways that doesn't matter. Flax seeds ground up contain very little omega's compared to the oil. Its mostly fiber. So yes it is good for you, and a good source of fiber, but not a great source for your omega's.
