View Full Version : Too much Amino Acids?

Sorry if this is a silly question but it's been bugging me and I've searched the forums and can't find the answer.
Until recently, I've been using protein shakes that did not include any (or hardly any) amino acids. So, I've been taking glutamine and arganine. Now, I've got some new protein for post workout and it includes fairly large quantities of the BCAA's. I'm looking at another protein supp. to take in the mornings, and it also includes large quantities of BCAA's. So my question is, do I need to keep up with exactly how many grams of these amio acids I'm taking in to keep from getting too many? For example....I only want to take 2-3 grams of arganine. My post work out shake includes 1.6 grams of it and I take a 1 gram arganine pill at night. So if my new morning shake includes 2 grams of arganine, I'm now up to 4.6 grams. Ugh, my head hurts trying to keep with it all.lol
So I guess my question is, does it really matter? As long as I'm not taking in over 5-6 grams of these BCAA's will it hurt me? I just don't want to be wasting my money buying supps. like glutamine and arginine if I'm getting all I need from my shakes. Any advice? Thanks guys.

What kind of protein were you using? Any decent whey protein will have a high amino acid profile.

Curious as to why you picked arginine? May help with the pump some with high doseages(increased blood flow), but no real need normally. Many of your male libido aids contain arginine for this purpose. /forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif

As mentioned above, any good whey protein will have a good amino acid profile, both EAA's and BCAA's. The difference is BCAA's are metabolized directly in the muscle. There are but 3 of these, L-Isoleucine, L-Leucine and L-Valine. There are 8 essential amino acids(EAA's). You cannot get too much of these, lack any on the other hand and it renders your protein pretty much useless(incomplete). Amino acids are the building blocks of protein, you cannot go wrong.

Still not sure of your need for arginine, you will have to elaborate. But the arginine that is included in protein is essential for a complete protein.

You are worrying about something you really don't need to.

not sure how this fits in, but my ex used to take glutamine, and pt a tbl in his shakes when the serving size was a tsp, (he wasnt very smart) and he had a stomach ach for a month. When he tried to take it again same thing (same dose... can you say stoopid?) so, DR's say you cant overdose on amino acids, but I am not sure I agree.

EAS Myoplex which the label shows, contains no amino acids.

Two reasons, one because of the great things that arginine can do for the body.... boost the immune system, help in protein synthesis, release growth hormone, reduce bad cholesterol.....and the list goes on.
The next reason is really the #1 reason and that is because of it's sexual benefits. I'm not sure how much detail I can get into here, so I won't but I've done my own personal tests, as a complete skeptic, and there is no doubt in my mind, l-arginine has a very nice effect on the sexual side of my life. I'm 26 yrs old and married and don't have a problem...it just makes it even better. /forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I'm kinda scratching my head here...
You do know that ALL protein is made up of amino acids, right? So every time you take in a gram of protein, you are getting an amount of amino acids... it just depends on the food as to the proportion of them. So in Myoplex, you ARE getting amino acids into your system.
My physiology is not the greatest, but I believe the protein we eat is broken down by the body into the amino acids, which are then reformed into muscle tissue by our bodies.
Read Metabolic Primer III. (http://www.abcbodybuilding.com/meta2.php) I need to review as well!
