What's the difference between natural PB, and the processed kind?

I was asking because I'm not taking cottage cheese right now, so I wanted to know if PB would give me the same slow-digestion.

Natural peanut butter is made up of peanuts and nothing else (barring the addition of salt). The processed kind is... well, processed and lacking in Omega 6 fatty acids (I believe). Natty PB is not an efficient protein source for a pre-sleep meal- for every 100 calories of it you're only getting 4 grams of protein /forum/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

The transfat in regular PB is not good at all, natty pb is a decent source of EFAs but you still need flax or fish oil. You can add it in a protien shake for extra flavor in your bed time shake (not to mention its good for you too).

Does the PB mix well with whey in a blender?

yep. whey + oats + pb is a great meal. i am trying to add CC to it but it sours the taste a bit, perhaps adding some special ingrediant will neutralize it (this is weird as i can eat CC straight out of the tub.)

That's just what I had in mind, mixing CC with PB and whey in a shake.

processed PB has all kinds of nasty additives and other stuff you don't want in your diet.

natural PB is extremely slow digesting, crushed peanuts have a GI of 7.

your pre-bed protein should come from chicken and/or cottage cheese.

I think that's the best most common shake out there. Chocolate whey+oats+natty PB+12oz water.

If I got my protein from whey, and the slow digestion from PB, would that be an acceptable pre-sleep stack?

+malto+dextrose(PWO ONLY)

tom10, if you're suggesting you can have oats and pb in your PWO drink, you're dead wrong. Either will slow digestion tremendously which is what you DON'T want. See the PWO sticky!!!

the rate of digestion of whey will be decreased due to the mixing with PB, but it won't be anywhere near as gradual and as long as cottage cheese.

So if I had to pick one of the two, which would be a better pre-sleep meal, oats/whey or PB/whey?

Shan Man, I didn't mean to imply that I used oats in my PWO, I meant that was the most commonly used shake. When i posted malto and dextrose after it, I didn't mean to imply that I used oats in my PWO, I never have, nor will I ever.

No. You also need proteins, and the casein type (slow).

None of them /forum/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Add some cottage, then that's a good ps meal.

OK tom10, I get it now. I was just thrown off by talking about the PWO shake in a PB thread! /forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The amount of trans fat in Jif, Skippy, etc is negligible. However, they do have some added sugar, and they use some oils besides peanut.

IMO, natty PB tastes better.

I've been wondering about peanut butter. Where I stand right now, Costco only sells the gross *smooth* Natural (Adams is the brand) peanut butter. But Save-On-Foods only sells Adams Crunchy peanut butter in stupid little small containers for about the same price Costco sells the big one's for. No one in town seems to sell Large Containers of Adam's peanut butter. Without a blender, I don't know what to do!

dunno

I think almond butter is even healthier/better tasting then peanut butter. It is a little more expensive though /forum/images/graemlins/frown.gif
