I did deadlifts for the first time today. They will definitely be a staple in my routine!!!

My question is:
*what is the significance of the switch grip vs regular grip?

I can hold more weight with sumo grip. Some say that sumo grip is detrimental, that both sides are not getting the same workload, but I havn't noticed it.

"Sumo" is a type of deadlift (wider stance etc...) and does not refer to the type of grip.

Mixed Grip (one hand pronated, other hand supinated) just allows you to hold more weight. Just alternate hands every set and you will be fine.

What I do is I work with a pronated (overhand) grip until it gets to heavy and my grip begins to fail too quickly then I switch to the mixed grip for the rest of my sets.

I do mixed grip to keep the bar from rolling, giving me the ability to lift more.

It stops the bar from rolling of your hands, you can hold more.....

yep, I also found it helps you hold a straighter back when lifting too

If you're really concerned about working the back unevenly, switch which hand is pronated and which is supinated every set while using mixed. Personally, I switch to a mixed grip for anything over 300lbs.

I Started working out about a year ago or less, about the time i signed up on this site. So as a beginner i was just doing basic workouts for the first couple months. I started learning more about nutrition then the actual weight lifting for the first part of my bodybuilding. I then started getting more hardcore about 4 months into it. Beleive it or not hardly anyone does deadlifts. If you see someone do them, its usually a big bodybuilder, or athletes. I just started doing squats too about 3 months ago. I have never felt DOMS like i get from sqauts. Form is a lot harder to get down on squats and deads, so it makes sense that those would be the last to learn.

but dont you dare think im not hardcore...I will take on anyone in the gym!!! /forum/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forum/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

No worries man....!! /forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif Its all good AJT, life goes on and ill be deadliftin again next week. I dont think 200 pounds for 8 reps on the 7th set was bad for my first deadlift.... /forum/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Not bad at all!

Your mission: find JP's old sig and read his deadlift posts, there's a TON of great info in them!

That's what I do. Also, I don't know this for sure, but I've always believed that since you have more control over the weight with the mixed grip, you are less prone to a back or shoulder injury from deadlifting.

Oops, I musta left out a zero in there. That should read, "Personally, I switch to a mixed grip for anything over 3000lbs". Thanks for catching that, Satch. /forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Overhand grip is if you are really hardcore and want to completely destroy your forearms. I use it on my warmup sets, for everything that is in my "heavy" zone I use the alternative grip.

Use neutral grip if you can.....but if it get's heavy enough to be doubtful of holding, go mixed, and make sure to switch hands of supination/pronation between sets.

i love deadlifts, but i have a question regarding the movement and what constitutes a set.

when completing a deadlift movement, am I to set the weights down as controlled as possible, or am I risking injury?

2nd question:
when doing a "set" of deadlifts, am I supposed to be setting the bar back on the floor between each rep?

sorry if I'm not being clear...

when doing squats or deadlifts you absolutely must keep control and form, which will also attribute to the time under tension application.

and when doing a set of deadlifts you can set the bar back on the floor or have a continuous grip. setting the bar back on the floor will induce more explosive and accelerative gains. whilst continuous grip will give a ****ed good pump.

Also, you can mix up Deadlift with "Good Mornings"... one of my favorite exercises /forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif
