Is there any difference in using a free barbell to do bent over rows and a stationary t-bar rowing machine ( whatever you call it. The kind at my gym is not the one you lay down on, but there is a litttle platform you stand on and bend over the bar. It is really convienent, just wondering if it is less effective than using a free barbell

I think it does relatively the same thing, although personally i feel like you can vary your grip and foot placement much more on the machine, allowing for more options.

Using the bar instead of the machine allows you to vary your body placement more, and gives you a much greater range of motion. I would take the bar over the machine any time (and I do, as there is a T-Bar machine in my gym, and I still use a bar against a corner held down with a dumbell).

I prefer the barbell version.. 1, I can lift more on it, and 2, I feel that the machine one limits my movements a bit.

Either one will get the job done. Select the one that you most prefer and pile on the plates. Warning: DON'T ROUND YOUR BACK.

The only one I've found I liked is the t-bar with the chest pad. Technically it's a machine, but the bar has the freedom to move left and right during the lift instead of a fixed path.
