View Full Version : Weird feeling in shoulder during french press ?
Today i was doing french presses, and my left shoulder was bothering alot, it felt like it was in a awkward position. afterwards my left shoulder felt very weak, and it clicked easily when i rowed my shoulders, my shoulder feels very weak like by the acromion where the joints are attached. I'm guessing it could be the rotator cuff ? And this is the bad shoulder, i've had months of pt for my rc, and a few for scapula/back. Even had mri's/x-ray done, and the doctor couldn't figure out what was wrong with my shoulder, only option left is to have sugrery, to see if it's a impingement. But he said i should just keep working out, and see if it improves. Which is what im doing, both my shoulders are equal is strength in all the shoulder excerises i do, im trying to figure out if i have a weak muscle in my left shoulder thats causing the discomfort. Anybody have any ideas ?
Thanks for reading, i know its pretty long /forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif.

It may possibly be a problem at the insertion point of your subscapularis. The subscap inserts at the lesser tubercle of the humerus (which is close to the acromion process). I have injured this muscle myself and it twinged when performing the french press and the overhead squat (where the humerus is in a similar position to that in the french press). It made my shoulder joint feel weak and unstable.
Also it is a deep muscle and cannot be easily palpated so this maybe why a doctor possibly missed it. However a good physical therapist should be able to identify and help with the problem (if indeed it is a problem with the subscapularis)
if that muscle is weak, can it make my shoulder have a dislocated feeling ? Also, when i tell my brother to look at my shoulders, he says my left shoulder blade bulges out more. can this be associated with a weak subscapularis ?

This is just my experience...
I had the exact same thing, my shoulders felt like they were going to buckle whenever I did french presses or overhead extensions. I started doing some rotator cuff exercises last October, and found I had some pretty darned weak rotator muscles (I was using 2.5lbs on a cable machine for reps!), but that has increased quite a bit (well, to 7.5, but that's triple the strength it was!), and I no longer have any problems with the overhead movements.
But you said your PT was working with your rotator? I don't know man!
i use bands for my rotator cuff excerises, there about the same strength for both arms. It could be that i have a deltoid imbalance now also. These are the weights i use for raises. I'm not sure, both my arms are equal in strengh, my left is probably a bit stronger in some excersies, but it has a weak\dislocated feeling :\, it feels the worst after my workouts. It'll start feeling better the days after a back workout, so im thinking its probably my rear delt\scapula muscles.
Front raise = 40x10
Side Raise = 25x10
bent over rear = 15 or 20x10.

Yes! the subscapularis is responsible for stabilization of the humeral head in the glenoid fossa. Basically it helps keep the ball and socket joint which is the shoulder nice and stable.

if its getting in the way of the workout, you need to go to a real doctor. someone in person with the training can better tell you what it might, be and what to do.
