What's the most amount of muscle you can gain a week without putting on any extra fat?
I think I heard 1 pound a week somewhere, but I'm not sure.

could have sworn I saw on a post "if you gain more than about one pound a week it's going to be fat". Something like that. I could have dreamed that up though. I tend to dream up a lot of memories on accident and cant remember if something actually happened or not, haha.

Well, some of us HYPERPlasia Bulking challengers are blowing that myth out of the water!
Between December 1 and 30th (4 weeks and a couple of days) I gained 10.2 lbs, and lost .6% body fat. That's about 2.5lbs a week of average.
Mr. Ustav gained 9 lbs in his first week and lost 1.6% BF.
I think we had both had a bit of a break from training for a while before beginning, so we might attribute some of that to "newbie gains", but I think if you are hardcore enough about it anything is possible.
Gains for seasoned pros may be closer to 1lb a week as they are working harder to fight the body's natural "stay small, it's easier on me" homeostasis.

2.5 lbs per week of solid muscle is not humanly possible, I don't care if you have never trained a day in your life.
There are many variables and many things could responsible for believing you ave gained 2.5 lbs of muscle in a week:
-When checking bodyfat, even if you take it from day to day you can get very different measurements. It is too easy to make a mistake.
-Water retention is a huge factor.
Think of it this way. 1 lbs of muscle is approx 2500 calories. In order to gain 2.5 per week you need to run a surplus of 6250 per week or 893 per day. Most people on a bulk do not comsume a surplus of 893 per day and even if they did that kind of consumption will most likely induce fat gains. So unless your body uses all it's caloric intake to build new muscle mass, which the human body will not do, it is not possible to gain that much muscle in a week.
How much can you gain? It is hard to say but people use the 1 lb per week as a rule of thumb. The 1 lb is not muscle, it is bodyweight.
Either way, when bulking aim for 1 lbs per week by eating a surplus of around 2500 cals per week. That's about 357 per day.

That's right! And as Coz pointed out, it's bodyweight, not just pure muscle all of it. But I can however tell that I have lost fat and added muscle during my bulk so far in the challenge, and it shows. It has nothing to do with my beliefs - it is not only a visual change, but the change on the scale and calipers has been constant. If it would have been misreadings, the numbers would have probably jumped up and down instead.

Exactly. If it were that easy to put on LBM, BB wouldn't be such a challenge or comitment.

Find out what your maintenance calories are and add to it until you are gaining a pound a week.

I'm very consistant and objective in my measurements, I don't look like I've gained 6.5 lbs of pure fat, and I've checked myself on two different scales.

1 lb of fat = 3500 calories.
Do a search or a google.
At 9 cals per gram and 454 grams per pound it comes ou to over 4000 however you have to take into account that fat is 10% water and the fact that some will be passed and not absorded. The common figure is 3500 calories per pound of fat.
As for the 2500 calories per pound of muscle. I am not sure where I got this figure from but I have read it at more than one source. Again you can try doing a google.

Yeah, I'm fairly sure I've seen that in a couple places as well, but it doesn't mean I believe it. (Not taking anything away from you Coz) I'm not going to google it, but I will pick through some scientific journals, as far as I'm concerned, 3500 equals a pound of anything...

Yes I have heard that as well but then I think how can 3500 calories per pound be the same for fat and muscle? Not possible. The calculations for fat work out.
Oh well, I just used 2500 to make my example of how gaining 2.5 lbs of muscle per week is not humanly possible. Whether it is 2500 or 3500 my point stands. /forum/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Ive gained 12.5 lbs of LBM in the Month of December while losing 3.6 % of BF. How I think I did this water, very clean bulking and workout my as@ of in the gym. Maybe it isnt possible but about 80% of the bulkiers in the Hyperplasia changellage including me have dont it

So basically what you are saying is you gained almost a half pound(.4 lbs) of lean muscle per day in the month of December...yah right.
You should be proud of your achievements but you ahould also be realistic of the possible and impossible. Most people are lucky to gain that in a year.

First off I am a teenager so my metablism is very quick, which helps fat loss. I have friends who weights change up and down about 10 lbs a week. Also the teenage body is very well capable of doing what I described, because of the testronie levels and other stuff. The guy at GNC said teenage body naturllay produces alot of stuff older men bodies cannot. I have used the same person to do BF every time and the same scale so I dont see how that isnt possible. Also I agree with Steve-O. I feel scientif studies and stuff for fat loss our good but every body is the not the same.

My last post was not scientific, it was logic. 10 lbs a week...WEIGHT is VERY different from LBM. Keep that in mind.
No matter what your "testronie" levels are (lol is that an Italian supplement?, lol j/k)...testosterone levels are .4 lbs of new lbm per day is just impossible. Again, nothing to do with science, only pure logic.
There are many factors involved with bodyfat testing and event the same person can err. Also, depending on water weight that you are carrying, body temperature and the time of day you are taking the measurement, they can all have an effect on your measurement.
As a final mention, the word of science supercedes the word of a GNC employee.

A pound of muscle coming from less calories than a pound of fat makes sense in way. Fat is 9 calories per gram; protein (muscle) is 4.
