Does anyone have any suggestions for improving your liver. A little while back my doctor told me, after I had a blood test, that my liver reading "wasnt that good" (I now wish I had inquired further) .. and he suggested I cut down on the amount of protein Im eating. At the time I mentioned on this forum how much protein I was eating, and most people said that they didnt believe that was the cause. So, does anyone know why I may have this problem, and how I can treat it? Thanks!!

I've also heard alot of peaople beeing told that they should eat less protein beacause of theyr liver problems.
One example is my dad .....
I'm not realy the one you should listen to but i think the liver can repair itself if you give it a break.
I think it would be best if you listend to your doctor , but try to get a second/third opinion.

Drinking plenty of water should help out.

Also, lay off any kind of alcohol if you drink it. I've never had a problem in the past, but I did drink in moderation. My new year's resolution is get throught the year without any alcohol. That includes holidays, no exceptions.

Thanks a lot for the replies so far! I have increased my water intake, and when I write out my new diet in the next 2 weeks I will be increasing the amount fo water I drink once again. Also, I dont drink any alcohol at all - originally I decided never to drink because I am pretty sure it hinders protein synthesis and the effectivness of creatine, but when I heard about my liver that was an even more significant influence in my decision.

Does anyone have anymore information on this milk thistle? I'll also do some internet searches myself. Thanks again everyone.

That awesome, and from what I've read so far it will be extremely beneficial!!!

Silymarin in the Milk thistle extracts is known to protect the liver by strengthening the outer membranes of liver cells, which prevents toxins from entering the cells. Silymarin also stimulates protein synthesis in liver cells, which helps to regenerate and repair the liver. Milk thistle silymarin compounds are also strong antioxidants, and have been shown to reduce damage to liver cells caused by repeated use of some prescription drugs, and may protect liver from alcohol (ethanolic damage), cirrhosis, hepatitis, and pollutants.

Yep, can't hardly go wrong with MT. Inexpensive yet quite effective. Best of both worlds.

I just rang my local health food store to see if they had some, and they told me they have like 10 different brand/types - for the different dosages. I did a search on the internet and it seems the dosages depend on the severity of your problem. Does this mean I have to see my doctor again before I buy some?

It is essential that the Milk Thistle extract you choose is standardised

Okay, I just found this..

[ QUOTE ]
To work as effectively as indicated in dozens of clinical trials, Milk thistle needs to be correctly prepared and standardized. Choose a supplement standardized to contain 70% to 80% silymarin, the active ingredient. This high concentration of silymarin is needed to ensure that a sufficient amount will reach the bloodstream and eventually the liver.

For all forms of liver problems, including alcohol-related ones: Take 400 to 600 mg standardized extract a day divided into three doses.

I hope this is right, because I have to go now.

There really is no standardized doseage for Milk Thistle. I would simply follow label directions.

Here is the brand I like. You can use this for a comparison.

Hey, pumped guns, is your liver problem hereditary? Like has your parents or grandparents had bad livers?

No, I dont think so. Im not sure about my Dad, but I dont think he has ever had any problems (he would have mentioned it when we were talking about my liver), and my mother had a full blood test last year and it was alright. Why do you ask?

Just because everything changes nutritionally if you are pre-exposed to liver or kidney disease.

It does not matter if your problem is inherited, Milk Thistle will still help immensely.
