View Full Version : cholesterol in whey
As i was making my early morning protein shake, i happened to glance at the back of the bottle and notice that one scoop of whey contains a decent amount of cholesterol, about 70 mg, which is supposedly 23% of the daily reommended value. I was having at least 6 scoops of whey per day, minimum. Should I be concerned about this? What do you guys do?
Yes, you should be concerned with it, especially considering you most likely use 2 servings of whey (46% of daily rec. intake) in your PWO shake. It's the same reason all-natural bodybuilders eat egg whites rather than whole eggs. Better brands of whey, such as Optimum Nutrition and Nature's Best, have lower amounts of Cholesterol. When I first started using supplements I bought some of GNC's whey and it was obscenely high in cholesterol.

Nonsense...dietary intake of cholesterol does not affect LDL levels. Watch your intake of trans fats and saturated fats in general which can increase LDL and lower HDL. Flax, fish oils...polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats can help lower your LDL levels and raise HDL levels.
In short, I would not be concerned with it.

Yes. Coz is spot on from what I know.
I find myself having to constantly re-interpret information I see on TV and in magazines. I forget that a lot of diet and excercise information is based on the everyman, not the everybodybuilder, and isn't necessarily backed by thorough research. I know this thread is a year and a half old...but thought that I would revive it, as I have the same question. Cholesterol in whey =? cause for concern?

True, dietary cholesterol hsn't yet been shown to significantly increase LDL cholesterol levels. But as it significantly raises concentrations of inflammatory markers - which are definitively linked with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease - should be limited. Check out the study:

Rev, the reason you have to constantly re-interpret information is because the media will jump on a single scientific study as conclusive and people lap it up. Many small studies have to have the same outcomes before a large study is performed, even then it may take a meta-analysis (review of many large studies, or all studies) to conclusive say something is or isn't so.

Thanks Pebble and vealboy - I appreciate your responses. I do have to say that I'm a firm believer in that too much of any one thing can't be good. I recently switched to ON, and have to say that I feel much better about drinking so much of it. If you can avoid some cholesterol, why not? Thanks again...
