View Full Version : How old is TOO OLD to start getting serious about bulk/cut?

I have a friend who is 37 and is not hideously out of shape, but has a long way to go. Without knowing exactly, I'd guess he is 6' and maybe 155 lbs. So he is thin but seems to have fairly high body fat for a thin person because he has a gut. I'll guess around 20%bf. If he decided once and for all he wants to be bigger and leaner, is 37 too old? I would think he'd have to go on a bulk and then a serious cut but I know it's a lot harder for a 37 year old than a 20 year old. Thoughts?

Come on - it's NEVER too late!
he could be cut and in great shape in matter 12-18 months.

How would you recommend he approach it, nutrition-wise? How much should he bulk before cutting?

Personal opinion. Until he can't look at himself in the mirror anymore. ( http://www.soccergaming.tv/images/smilies/swear2.gif)

Go to nutrition section - you'll find bulk/cut diets and programs - all that you need.

Personally asking if 37 is too old is an insult J/K. I'm his age and have been bulking for 15 months with no end in site. I put on a fairly decent amount of weight last year with little fat gain. Anything is possible and no that's not too old LOL.

One of my best friends is 41 and adds weight during his bulks as if he's a 20 year old.

wow 26 miles at 90...... hope that works out for him /forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif
LOL - Okay I couldn't resist chiming in on this one.
I'm 40 and female - probably in the best shape of my life - definitely the strongest I've ever been and without being nearly as serious as I should about my diet, I've dropped 8% BF this year. The only difference for me from when I was younger and working out (34!) is I can't eat as many carbs as I used to.
I got to watch this huge guy's jaw drop to the ground in the gym the other day. He couldn't get over a girl spending over an hour in the weights section of the gym, hogging a squat rack for a large portion of time. He kept asking me all these questions and when I told him I was 40 with three kids -- well that's when the jaw dropped.
Bottom line -- you're never too old.

I'm 35 and have been working out for 2 years. I lost a lot of bodyfat before I started working out actually and have ranged between 6% and 12% BF since then. I've mostly bulked during that time (very successfully) but just finished my first cut, which was moderately successful. There is a lot of learning in store for ANYONE (young or old) who is about to get started with bodybuilding in order to maximize success and I'm still learning all the time. My next cut will definitely be more successful than my first because I know a whole lot more about cutting in general, and how my body responds to different foods, excercises, etc. in particular.
Suggest to your friend that he become a STUDENT of the ABC articles here and he will be on his way to much success!
