O.K. I have finally seen a video on how to perform a hang clean. LOL! Please! Tell me how this is supposed to help you with your back. To me, it doesn't look that useful. Does it really use that much muscle and/or incorporate any other muscles in the exercise? I have never seen anyone do these so it doesn't look that effective. Sorry, I just had to laugh!

Yes it does, lifting it off the ground like a dead lift and continually doing that should affect ur lower back. Probably affects the upper back too. You just wont know until you try it. Its taxing.

From my experience I don't think I got much back work from them, but they certainly hit your entire trap/delt complex very effectively, and are the best compound shoulder exercise you can do.

If you dont like it, dont do it.
Do what you feel.

Well, a HANG clean you perform while your arms hang down. So the deadlift part isn't there.
But do a hard set of hang cleans and tell me your delts are fried /forum/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Lol! Don't worry. I will try these out at some point and time. I just had to see if anyone else thought of them as I did. I'm not putting the exercise down, 'cuz I've never tried it. But to watch it for the first time, made me think, "Does this work?"

Does anyone have anything they would like to add to this exercise or is this what you are used to seeing in a 'Hang Clean'? Any other video's out there that show this exercise being done?

You'd be surprised how well it hits your rear delts. For variety you can also do dumbbell cleans, standing and seated.

Do hang cleans AFTER deadlifts sometime. Traps, delts, and all the small muscles across your upper back take a real beating. It's definitely not much of a lower back exercise. Forearms can take a beating, too. The hang clean is a good chaser for the deadlift. Remember...
Power snatch or clean, from the floor, hang snatch or clean from the hang, where, as the man sez, your arms hang down.
To get the most trap from hang cleans, I will sometimes keep the weight real low and do them with no leg drive. Truly doing it from the hang like that can beat your traps up fast. The other option is to use heavier weight, and the overload will accomplish about the same thing. And since you have to hang onto the weight the whole time, that also wears out your traps.

Hang cleans usually give me some serious DOMS on my traps but never really my lats or rear delts... But they aren't useless especially if you play any sports, those and push presses help with explosiveness

No struggling movement is useless.
If it involves any type of useness of strength it is working something.

Bingo.
Hang cleans improve balance & power and in turn will improve other lifts. It's one of my favorite lifts.
I have seen my traps grow & stanting shoulder press feels waaay more stable as I improve in hang cleans and push press.

the only beef i have with hang cleans is dropping the bar back down to the hanging position. that cant be good for the back. i prefer just to do regular cleans or full out clean and jerk. after a few jerks i always start to feel the burn in my lats from holding the bar over head.
