On to another bodypart. The areas of interest to me here are the areas right near my armpits that seem to not develop. So, what is good to get the width at the top of the back?

The only exercise you need is the almighty deadlift. It occupies places 1-7 on my top ten list, and is followed by chins and behind-the-back shrugs. Ooooh, and t-bar rows. If you deadlift heavy and you deadlift consistently, and then follow that with behind the back shrugs, bent-over rows, and other fun stuff like chins and t-bar rows, I swear your back will grow. The deadlift is the end-all, be-all of back exercises, in my opinion. All hail the mighty deadlift! I do not believe there is a more honest measure of true, balls-out strength. I know it doesn't require as much technique as a squat, but I think the DL is the mighty leveler, the lift that humbles all. And at the same time, it will give you power, power that will even frighten you.

Weighted wide grip chins and obviously what sta63bmx suggested.
It's one of the most common things you will hear.
Person A: Yo...I hit my back hard every week and it still won't grow.
Person B: Do you do heavy arse deadlifts?
Person A: No...why should I?

I really enjoy heavy One Arm DB Rows and Reverse Close Grip Chins. The seem to really lace into my back. Then again, I like any type of rowing exercises for the back.

Here's my 2 cents on the matter......... I am a fan of standing in front of the cable machine, have the cable as high as it can go, have the straight bar attachment, and extend your arms out straight in front of you. Then, keeping your arms basically locked straight, bring the bar down to your stomach area, it will probably actually hit your hips. Don't go too heavy and have to bend over slightly to force the weight down. These will hit the spot you are looking for man. I have gained an extra bit of mass from that exercise.

There is back thickness and width.
For thickness, nothing beats deadlifts, either floor or rack. For width,, any widegrip pulling motion (either pull ups or pulldowns) reign as king.

Deadlift and bent over barbell rows are the best mass builders IMO.

Wow, I cannot believe that deadlifts hit the high back like you all say. I guess I am different. With me, deadlifts hit mid to low back. I use weighted wide grip pull ups for widening out the lats. Also to hit the center, mid to upper back, I use narrow grip pull downs... Interesting but this works for me.

BENT OVER ROWS!! Nothing thickens the back like some sets of big, heavy bent over barbell rows.

I don't feel like they hit super hard on the first go-round, but they'll usually wipe out most of your energy so when you come back with a few more sets to target upper back, you get a much better response. I usually run chins or rows, hang cleans, and behind the back shrugs after deadlifts, and I think those exercises get a lot more effective once you've pre-exhausted with the mighty DL.
I initially feel it mostly as an ***/ham/lumbar exercise, but it also saps a lot of life out of my upper back, and makes the following exercises hit harder.
I also think the squat and deadlift are inextricably linked...for me, when one goes up, the other goes up. And it's just fun. /forum/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

To develope the top part of the lats use wide grip pull-ups, not pulldowns!
My favorite back exercises are multiple grip chins(especially wide grip behind the head lat pull-ups), T-bar deadlifts and rows, deadlifts, barbell rows, seated cable rows, and dumbell pull overs
