For reasons beyong my control, I must drop out of the challenge at this point; I'm not dropping the gym, my diet, or my bulk, but I cannot participate in the competition (this one, next one, though...)

I will be using a three-day training split; it will look like this:

Tuesday: Back/Biceps/Forearms
Thursday: Legs/Abs (I might leave the abs out of this one, depending on how much work they get during the martial arts classes)
Friday: Chest/Shoulders/Trap/Triceps

Marial arts on Monday and Wednesday will provide cardio and stamina; basketball (if I have the time, with college and all) will take care of the rest.

Here come my stats:

Weight: 166 (ouch - not as good at maintaining as I thought I was).

Caliper measuremenets:

Pectoral = 9
Abdomen = 13
Thigh = 12
Subscapula = 11
Tricep = 11
Midaxillary = 9
Suprailiac = 11
Bicep = 10
Calf = 13

7-Point Test:

BF = 9.5 %
LBM = 150.2 lbs
FAT = 15.8 lbs

9-Point Test:

BF = 16.1 %
LBM = 139.3 lbs
FAT = 26.7 lbs

That's quite a difference between the 7-point test and the 9-point test! The 9-point test may be more accurate, but I most certaintly do not look how people imagine a 16% bf person to look like!

I'll be posting both the 7-point and the 9-point measurements in the journal.

Maybe your bicep reading was too high and thats what caused such a big difference between the two readings. It seems weird that someone so lean everywhere else would have that much on the bicep. By the way, good luck with the challenge!

Thanks, SB!

I had to measure the bicep on my own, which is not the easiest thing to do for me. Maube next week, when I get someone to take certain measurements for me, the number will come out to be different.

I saw your pictures a while ago, I agree you look closer to the single digit bf%.

But Yu said you can take both in his article:

For all ABC Challenge competitors: you will need to provide 7 or 9-point skin fold measurements every week. Since the 3-point test isn't as accurate, they will not be allowed.

So I think that is a good idea. For the mental aspect as well. /forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif

A bit late on updating, but...

I have not lifted at all this week, due to the whole Back thing - I want to get back into lifting as soon as possible, and I think that by next week, I'll be just dandy - I'll probably start body-weight exercises tomorrow to see how much I can handle.

Went up a pound this week, but the caliper measurements seem to have stayed the same.

Caliper Measurements:

Pectoral = 9
Abdomen = 13
Thigh = 12
Subscapula = 11
Tricep = 11
Midaxillary = 9
Suprailiac = 11

7-Point Test:

BF = 9.5 %
LBM = 151.1 lbs
FAT = 15.9 lbs

9-Point Test:

BF = 16 %
LBM = 140.3 lbs
FAT = 26.7 lbs

Once again, the difference is quite staggering.

Thanks Jacob, Yu!

I've been working with the back situation in the following way: first day when it happened, as soon as I got home from college, I spent the next 15 hours in bed, as to not aggrevate it at all.

When I woke up next morning around 8 (my class wasn't until 2:45 that day), I took a long, hot bath. By the time I got out, my girlfriend came over, and gave me a twenty-minute massage (she's training to be a masseur [sp?]). A bit after that, I began icing it for 20 minutes at a time, every two hours that I was home.

Getting to/from college and walking around was painful, but slowly and steadily, I managed it. Came home, iced the back again, then hit the bath. Afterwards, another massage from my girl. More icing until right before bed, hot bath, massage, sleep.

I repeated that cycle until yesterday, when my back felt considerably better. I began doing some light stretching in the morning, kept the hot bath and massages, but stopped icing it. Before bed, I did some much more heavy stretching, took a hot bath again, massage from my girl, and hit the sack.

Today when I woke up, my back felt just fine. After some stretching and bridging, I took another hot bath, and headed to the college gym (for the first time). Not wishing to push it, I only did 2x15 dips (bodyweight), 3x10 wide-grip lat pulldowns (80 lbs, light weight), some chest presses (god knows how light that was), a bit of shoulder press (extremely light), and leg extensions 3x10 (100, 110, 100 lbs). Later today, I'll do some bodyweight pull-ups, ice + hot bath + massage again, and some stretching. Hopefully, by tomorrow, everything will be back to normal.

A great deal of thanks for your concern, guys! It really means quite a bit to me.

Today at the gym was horrible. Too many people... just way too many of them, sleeping on the equipment, stopping in front of the mirrors to talk, etc. Ugh.

I had to make do with some wide-grip lat pulldowns and dips, as well as leg press (90x10, 180x10, 270x10, 320x10, 320x10), which I quickly supersetted with one set of leg extensions (100x10), ended with a static contraction. Mmm...
Threw in some calve raises (80x15, 100x15, 80x15). The gym was completely full by that time, but before leaving, I decided to see if I can squat now. Went very light on the Smith machine (50x10, 65x10, 100x10), and decided to leave it for later, becase my back was acting up (muscles).

Wished I could have had a better workout, but it was better than nothing. Much better.

Added a new supplement to my diet today - kelp! Necessary for proper thyroid function, and often missing from many people's diets in proper quantities. I realized that my diet is greatly lacking in iodine - even my salt is iodine free - I need to supp it. Plus, better thyroid function equals faster metabolism equals faster muscle growth.

Now, if I had some selinium, I would be set.

At this point, the muscles of my back feel perfectly fine; but I seem to feel some extra pressure on the lower spine when squatting.

No pain, and it's not uncomfortable per se - it's just as if the spine itself became somewhat weaker.

I scheduled an appointment with a chiroproctor (sp? sorry) for tomorrow after college, and if it doesn't improve within a week, I'll get some X-rays done, just to be safe.

President Wilson
09-22-2003, 05:05 AM
Excellent choice, it could be innervation problems, and an increase in circulation via chiropractic methods will get you feeling perfect again.

My oh my. What a workout today.

I found a person on the basketball team who was working legs today (nomally, I don't go to gym on Mondays, as I have martial arts in the morning; but because we have off on Friday and I won't be able to use the gym, I had to make do today). Not only was he doing the leg press with some moderate poundage (270 lbs), but he was also doing SQUATS! We fell into a pattern of doing the same exercises today, and had a nice little chat about how even on the most crowded days, like today, you can still work legs all you want.

We really pushed each other today (went up to 160 for 10 reps, two sets on the standing calf raises; I don't even work my calves in general), and an hour and a half flew by really quickly.

And now I'm paying for it. I'm sitting in the computer lab, hoping, praying that the half of my protein shake that I managed to swallow stays down; it would be a terrible waste of protein if I throw up, which is the general direction where my digestive system seems to be heading. I was going to go home at first, but since it's a two-hour subway ride, I decided not to risk throwing up on a monk on the Q train, and instead spending some time behind the PC in this air-conditioned computer lab.

Please, don't let the protein go to waste.

Still was a wicked workout, though.

That said, tomorrow is my birthday, and I'm hoping to wake up to it with DOMS like no other.

I'm going to keep it clean, because I won't really be celebrating it (I'm just gonna go see a movie with two or three friends).

On Saturday, my family is treating me at some really good restaurant; but they specialize in seafood, and I heard they have excellent steak, so I'll just skip on the dessert and enjoy some high-quality protein. Mmm... /forum/images/graemlins/cool.gif
